Failed Recording

Just got back from a few days away, box failed to record Intercity125 on Channel 5HD 15/5/18,  Innocent on ITVHD 17/5/18, Ambulance o BBCiHD 17/5/18, Gardeners World on BBC1HD 18/5/18 and Casualty 0n BBC1HD 19/5/18. All recorded via EPG.

Somerset via Mendip transmitter.

I still think that the main suspect is Youview boxes tuned in to channels from more than one transmitter. Sadly we have to rely on Youview keeping their transmitter / MUX data current which given the ongoing big raft of changes is where maybe they are falling down or perhaps no-one at Youview Towers is tasked with this very important job?

Can a moderator on here reassure us that this is something which Youview are keeping on top off?

I've had no problems here, (T1000 box, Redruth transmitter, no frequency changes). Maybe the problems are more linked to the current Freeview frequency change.

That's certainly been my thought.

Failed recordings were quite rare prior to all these transmitter changes.

Hi everyone. Thanks again for all those reporting the recording failures, your input has been super helpful. 

We have been working with Youview on this as a high priority case and have made good progress in identifying several issue signatures which has narrowed the scope of investigation. We're clear that the actual scheduling of the recording works as it should and the box doesnt "forget" to record. Instead it's the scheduling/wake up components in the pipeline and how the box then "listens" for the programme stream ID carried ahead of the actual broadcast play out that are the 2 main factors in play here. 

@gomezz makes a great point about the mux data - DSO, 700mhz clearance and other transmitter work does have an impact on where channels live, however the EPG data looks current and correct for the regional variations.

As we're looking at the whole EIT/PF area (basically how the box knows whats on and whats coming next) as part of this I will check that assumption over the next couple of days.

In case I didn't mention it before it is clearly a Youview issue as my Panasonic recorder, some 5 years old, hasn't missed a single recording during this time & it's on the same aerial feed as the Youview box & recording the same programmes (because of this issue).

It is not just about the regional EPG data being correct.  If the box is listening to the wake up signal from one region but the channel on which a recording is due is tuned into another region then that is a welll-known source of failed recordings on many makes and models of PVR past and present.

 I ask again: Can it be confirmed that Youview are keeping their transmitter / MUX data used by the Youview boxes for channel retunes bang up to date?

I posted previously (a couple of pages back in this thread) that on 16th May I had failed recordings on E4 at 8.30pm and 9pm with Big Bang Theory and The 100..... so I had fingers crossed for the same on Wednesday 23rd May not to repeat.

Big Bang Theory did record and The 100 was listed as a failed recording..... however on checking the BBT recording it had actually run for the full hour-and-a-half to include The 100???  I also recorded Timeless at 10pm after The 100 and although that did record it only started after it had been going for four minutes.  So was this a bit of the ongoing recording issues mixed in with the good old fun that is Automatic Recording????

I really can't believe that these major failed recording issues are still ongoing considering when it was first posted about, surely if it was being treated with urgency it would have been fixed by now.  I do record a lot of things (always the three programmes so if AR doesn't work right I'll still get all the bits of the show I won't in the middle) and most things do seem to be recording so I'm maybe not getting it as bad as many others...... but come on BT, get this sorted.

Very much the BTTV way sadly. After a horrendous problem laden start with them a few years ago, our system has settled down very nicely and we've been mercifully problem free for a long while now, with the exception of a few of these failed recordings recently.

But it's the fact that there are no actual 'tv engineers' as such present within the TV arm of the organisation that gets me. This whole 'collaborative forum approach' to problem solving, utlising 'volunteers' is quite flabergasting, given how much money BT have invested in their TV offering - in football rights fees alone!

Just come across this site.  Good to see BT making efforts to solve the problem.  I also have missed recordings.  Might be able to throw a bit of light/confusion into the works.

1. Over the years I have had  arious Panasonic, Humax, Thomson (Sagem - horrible cheap box but it works) and now BT YouView, roughly 2 years old.

2. I’m on the Dover transmitter and my boxes are religiously kept up to date with retunes.

3. Only ever had recording failures on the Humax boxes and never when they are new. Usually they are 2+ Years old when the problem shows up.

4. My YouView box is a T2100 manufactured by, you’ve guessed it, Humax.  Starting to see a pattern?

On my Humax branded boxes I could get no sense from thei support line, so it’s good to see BT trying.  However, might I wonder if the problem is hardware related?  Do Humax have common circuitry in the T2100 and in my old PVR9200 and PVR9300?  If so could it be aging in componentry.

I’m no expert although my Physics degree means that I do now solid state components do age through age, heat cycling etc.  Just seems strange that all my problems are Humax related.  They make brilliant boxes while they work.
