Re: Fake phone call from BT - broadband will be cut off today

Just had the same kind of call from 01532 621740. It was a  plummy British voice asking me to press 9. It also quoted an 0800 number to call.  I thought it sounded odd and afterwards I realised that one of the sentences was very poorly phrased. I think the recording was a “spliced” audio recording.

Re: Fake phone call from BT - broadband will be cut off today

I had this call today from 01201 176459.  BT need to shut these people down.  I hung up on it - obvious scam to some of us but elderly or otherwise vulnerable people may fall for it (whatever "it" is).

Re: Fake phone call from BT - broadband will be cut off today

Had half a dozen of these calls this morning - it's a right pain as I work from home so can't ignore the phone. Call protect picked up just one of them.

Re: Fake phone call from BT - broadband will be cut off today

Have had lots of these calls saying Internet to be cut off as IP address compromised. First were from Asian sounding male, then us/Canadian woman who this morning started off message by saying " this is Shirley ......" . Reply from me not polite. I do worry as have autistic son and it is the kind of thing that would panic him.  Hopefully have got through that it is a scam.

Re: Fake phone call from BT - broadband will be cut off today

Whilst I agree that hanging up is the best approach, I tried the 'press 1' just to see what happens,  (not recommended).  An indian sounding voice appears on the line with the classic Windows Control 'R' scam.  Then saying look how many issues you have sir, they asked me to download software from a remote access site. ( they chose anydesk, but in the past they have tried TeamViewer and FastSupport).

So, that's the scam. You download the remote access software and they access your machine.  I kept them talking for about twenty minutes, before the line dropped. I think BT may have helped with that.  The only problem was that the screenshot that i used from the web for anydesk must have been out of date.

Re: Fake phone call from BT - broadband will be cut off today

someone in my family deals with nuisance calls in an innovative (and possible illegal) way. He bought a referee's whistle - an Acme Thunderer - and recorded himself blowing it extremely loudly for about ten seconds. Then when a nuisance call is made to him, he plays the recording as he is talking asking the nuisance caller what the H*** he/or she is doing as there's a noise on his phone. It works.

We just had the same call. Went onto MyBt to double check all okay. Did not follow any of their instructions in phone call. Likely they after login and personal details.

See ValleyForge’s post above - it just ends up being the usual Microsoft computer scam.
