Fault with DNS name resolution - timeouts

I have been having problems recently using the internet, due to what appears to be a fault with the BT DNS service.

For the past 24+ hours DNS resolution from the default servers picked up on my Home Hub 4 has been "hit and miss" - timing out more often than returning a response.

Primary DNS: 213.120.234.14

Secondary DNS: 213.120.234.30

Even when there is a DNS response it can be very slow.

Symptoms are the same from different PCs and continue after the Home Hub has been rebooted.

The result is that it is close to impossible to use the internet as web pages fail to load, or when they do load they are very slow to start to open

The ideal solution would be to be able to change DNS servers on the Home Hub to use OpenDNS and workaround has been to manually change DNS Name Server on individual devices - but what is the fix?

Additional information and examples from the checks I ran as follows:

First of three attempts with a nslookup:

nslookup www.google.com

Server:  BThomehub.home

Address:

DNS request timed out.

    timeout was 2 seconds.

DNS request timed out.

    timeout was 2 seconds.

*** Request to BThomehub.home timed-out

Second attempt

nslookup www.google.com

Server:  BThomehub.home

Address:

DNS request timed out.

    timeout was 2 seconds.

DNS request timed out.

    timeout was 2 seconds.

*** Request to BThomehub.home timed-out

Third attempt

nslookup www.google.com

DNS request timed out.

    timeout was 2 seconds.

Server:  UnKnown

Address:  ...

Non-authoritative answer:

Name:    www.google.com

Addresses:  2a00:1450:4009:803::1011

          173.194.34.116

          173.194.34.115

          173.194.34.113

          173.194.34.114

          173.194.34.112

Checking on the BT Home Hub I see

Primary DNS: 213.120.234.14

Secondary DNS: 213.120.234.30

Direct DNS Query on the primary DNS Server

nslookup www.microsoft.com 213.120.234.14

Server: indnsc91.bt.net

Address: 213.120.234.14

DNS request timed out.

timeout was 2 seconds.

DNS request timed out.

timeout was 2 seconds.

DNS request timed out.

timeout was 2 seconds.

*** Request to indnsc91.bt.net timed-out

Same on the secondary DNS server

nslookup www.microsoft.com 213.120.234.30

Server: indnsc100.bt.net

Address: 213.120.234.30

DNS request timed out.

timeout was 2 seconds.

DNS request timed out.

timeout was 2 seconds.

DNS request timed out.

timeout was 2 seconds.

DNS request timed out.

timeout was 2 seconds.

*** Request to indnsc100.bt.net timed-out

However if I use OpenDNS I get a quick response:

nslookup www.microsoft.com 208.67.222.222

Server: resolver1.opendns.com

Address: 208.67.222.222

Non-authoritative answer:

Name: lb1.www.ms.akadns.net

Address: 134.170.184.133

Aliases: www.microsoft.com

toggle.www.ms.akadns.net

g.www.ms.akadns.net

Re: Fault with DNS name resolution - timeouts

Have you tried turning off your Homehub for about half an hour then switching it back on. This may prompt it to connect to different a server.
