Thanks - anything in particular that it's worth saying when I make this phone call? Is it a genuine mistake, or a case that they will send whatever they have and either *should* work, but one is slightly better than the other?

Just say that you have been having problems with the HomeHub since the firmware upgrade and then you noticed that it was the HomeHub3a and not the HomeHub3b. Quite often they do send whatever they have to hand, sometimes you can be very unlucky and get a customer returned model (Which does not work properly).
