Hello I ve got a D-Link DIR-615-D4 off EBay (it was used with virgin media Virgin Firmware: 1.00VG) with the intention of
replacing my HH2.
Pippincp has kindly offered to guide me through the process.
He rightly pointed out that a new thread could prove useful to other users too and here it is.
On the bottom of the router is a label which will give you the version number of the router.
Something like this.
H/W Ver : D4 F/W Ver:1.00VG.
From that you now know you have a D4 router which is all the info you need.
Now you need either the D-Link stock firmware for it or the custom DD-WRT firmware.
This guide is for the DD-WRT firmware but stock should be similar.
I'm not putting everything in one long post as I want to guide Brinnie as much as possible rather then just post and leave him to it so it will be in stages.
Go here and enter 615 in the search bar. Click on the version you have and download the factory webflash .bin file.
Once you have it Brinnie post back. If you have any probs post back.
Good idea pippin better keep me on a short lead 🙂
I ve got the file.
This version v24 preSP2[Beta] Build:15778
Now you need to flash it to the router.
I hope you have it on the PC/Laptop you are connected to.
You need then to enter the routers GUI via your web browser. I cannot actually remember the default one but it is either 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.2.1
User and pass will be admin.
Go to the admin page and select firmware update and browse to the factory (etc) bin file.
Click OK and update the firmware (takes a few mins, be patient).
Get back when done.
I have the router connected to a pc which is not connected to anything else, not to the lan nor the net.
I ll take the file over with a usb stick.
It s done.
I m now looking at a screen at a different router screen.
- dd-wrt control panel -
It is asking me to set up an new user and password.
Out of curiousity, why is that important since you need to be wired into the router to make any changes?
Set up your user name and password (it's so you can make changes to suit you in future) you are on custom firmware now! Enjoy!!!!
Back in a min
Soz about that!
Now you enter the setup screen like this
Click on the drop arrow for auto and select PPPoE like this
For user name and password I use my BT email addy and password and it works s yours should.
Aftr that set up your wireless if you need it and you are good to go.
Connect the router up but don't turn it on. Reboot the modem and wait for it to settle (about 30secs bur seems longer)
then turn on the router.
Everything should be hunky dory! If not as always get back (you need to reboot the modem if you put the HH back on)
