Since I posted my original question I saw an item about the openreach nte5c socket. I know I may be over egging the pudding, but would that be a feasible solution?
It would be, but simply replacing the lead is cheaper, easier and more reliable as the NTE5c is a cheap and nasty device.

It would be a waste, and you would not use the phone outlet. Just use a convertor lead, or if you want to keep using the microfilter, put it on a short phone extension lead, out of the way. The microfilter does not do any filtering on the broadband side, so you are just using it as a convertor.
Like this, about £3.
