Google Chrome not responding when attaching files to BT emails

Go to solution

I use Google Chrome as my browser.  When attaching files to an email I'm composing in my BTinternet email account, (by clicking the Attach File button in the compose email header) I would normally get a pop-up window showing me a Windows File Explorer folder view and allowing me to browse to and select one (or more) files to attach, and I then click the "Open" button to upload and attach the selected file(s) to the draft email, before sending.

But sometimes the pop-up window freezes, showing me the files in the most recent folder, but not the usual folder structure in the left-hand margin, and not letting me select any file.  Then, after just a second or two, the window greys out and in the title bar at the top it says "Google Chrome is not responding".  I then get a dialogue box asking "close the program / wait for the program to respond".  I usually click "close the program", and then when it says "please wait while we report this to Microsoft" I usually press cancel, then close the defective window.

To get Attach File to work properly again requires different actions each time.

Sometimes it only requires logging out of BT email, closing the Chrome browser, reopening the browser and logging back into BT email.  Sometimes it additionally requires restarting the laptop.  And tonight despite 2 restarts and then a power down and cold boot I could not get Attach File to work again in Google Chrome, and instead I had to use MS Edge browser to access my BT email account, attach the files, and send the emails, which it did all without any problem at all.

Has anyone else had this experience with Google Chrome not responding when attaching files to BT emails?

Does anyone know what is the cause, and what is the best solution?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Try clearing the cookies and history from your Chrome browser.

Thanks.  I thought I'd set Chrome to delete cookies and history every time when I close the program, but whatever I did has evidently failed to achieve that objective.

Interestingly, MS Edge also produced the selfsame problem this morning, which I'd never experienced before with that browser.

Clearing cookies and history has worked, and has enabled attaching files once more. Thank you again.
