Sorry I misunderstood. I assumed the BT home hub used DCHP. So do I just take the 500mb/s speeds on the chin or is there anything I can do to reach the speeds advertised?

DHCP isn't a connection protocol, it is a method of allocating IP addresses that sits on top of the connection protocol.
