High Ping when using streaming services and gaming

Hi

I have had this problem for about a year, when I am gaming and someone else in the house is streaming any service such as Netflix or Amazon, the ping starts spiking and wont stop until the stream has stopped.

My computer being used to game on is connected via ethernet, there is no issue inside the residence, which has been confirmed by multiple engineers and the exchange has also been investigated.

After the latest time of contacting BT about this issue (3 months ago), we have upgraded the internet package and are now stuck in a new contract while the issue has persisted.

is there anything that can be done?

Re: High Ping when using streaming services and gaming

Hi @lisa211,

Welcome to the Community and thank you for posting. I'm sorry you've been having problems with your connection while gaming and streaming at the same time. I'm a bit of a gamer myself so I can understand how frustrating latency can be.

The truth be told, the more application you are running at the same time on your connection will have a negative impact on ping and latency. An acceptable ping is around the 40ms-60ms mark or lower. A ping of over 100ms shows a noticeable delay.

What sorts of speeds does your connection achieve? You say you are seeing high ping, how high?

To get an idea of how your connection is performing, please could you run a couple of ping plotters. One while gaming by itself and another while gaming and streaming? This will help to show where the delay is happening and what can be done to help improve the latency.

Thanks

Paddy
