Home Hub 3 - Lock up of Home Hub Interface

I've recently joined BT Broadband and obtained a Home Hub 3.


Generally, it works well with a reasonable connection speed for the area I live in.


My problem is that intermittently the Home Hub locks up the wireless side.


To explain the hub is still connected to the Internet, all the lights are blue, I can connect to the wireless network, I have checked for other routers in the area on the same channel but I cannot access the Internet.


The problem seems to occur when we have been utilising the hub in 54g mode and then try to utilise a pc with wireless-N but even this is intermittent. The wireless connect to the router is available when it locks up but I cannot access anything including


I'm normally forced to connect up to the router with an Ethernet cable and restart the router.


I also seem to have a problem with the DNS server which are built into the router. What should these DNS server address be and how can I change them?

Hello bhutch and welcome to the forums.


If you are sure you are not having wireless channel clashes with your neighbours (inssider is a freeware download which is great for spotting this)....


Sounds like the HH3 is having problems with Wireless lockups. It might be worth trying to run the HH3 for a bit in 802.11b/g (no N) for a bit. The Hub can either run in g or N mode but not both at the same time.


Just see if it is any more stable after changing the following:

A-Z in the top right corner.

Wireless Connections Enable/Disable

Change the dropdown from 802.11b/g/n to 802.11b/g

Click apply.


This might fix your wireless problems but let us know.


As for the DNS, there is bad news. You cannot change the DNS servers in the HH3. If you want to use different DNS servers (e.g Google/OpenDNS), you need to change them on each client. Sorry.

Should I get a response from the BT DNS Servers?

When I ping the DNS IP addresses listed in the HH3 I do not get a response.

You should get a response from the DNS servers, but you shouldn't be able to ping them. Google allow ping to most of their servers - including DNS.:


BT's DNS server:


tng@marwood:~$ ping
PING ( 56(84) bytes of data.
--- ping statistics ---
6 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 5039ms


Google's DNS server:


tng@marwood:~$ ping
PING ( 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from icmp_req=1 ttl=49 time=24.3 ms
64 bytes from icmp_req=2 ttl=49 time=23.7 ms
64 bytes from icmp_req=3 ttl=49 time=23.6 ms
--- ping statistics ---
3 packets transmitted, 3 received, 0% packet loss, time 2003ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 23.684/23.926/24.375/0.341 ms

If you think you are having DNS problems, it might be worth a try using Google or OpenDNS DNS servers (Google don't do Typo forwarding, BT and OpenDNS do).
