Home Hub 3 PoE

Go to solution

Simple question that telephone support could not answer.

Does Home Hub 3 support Power Over Ethernet devices directly, or do I need to buy a booster or something, to fit between the hub and the device?

TIA, Tony

Power over Ethernet ≠ Ethernet over mains wiring.

Ethernet is Ethernet. It's a universal standard. Devices don't know or care what they're connecting to really, the Ethernet port takes care of it 🙂

Thanks to all for your reseponses.

John36 has given me exactly the information I need, so I can now buy a PoE IP Camera knowing it can be powered directly from the Hub.

The hub cannot supply power over the Ethernet connection, in fact if you apply any power to the connection, you are likely to damage the home hub.

You have to have a power injection and isolating splitter to prevent power getting back into the home hub.

We have a difference of opinion here, now who do I believe, John46 or Keith_Beddoe?

Keith, I don't want to apply power to the hub, I am expecting the hub to supply power to the camera.

Which one's right?

Key: <------> Ethernet cable

[Hub] <-----> [Camera]

or

[Hub] <----> [Isolating Splitter Power Device Thingy] <-----> [Camera]

Re: Home Hub 3 PoE

I have spoken to John and he was getting confused between Power Over Ethernet and Ethernet over Power.

[Hub] <----> [Isolating Splitter Power Device Thingy] <-----> [Camera]

is the right answer.
