Home network set up .. how to ?

I have just joined BT broadband.

I have most things working with the home hub, but want to share data and devices between my Desktop (Windows XP) and my Laptop (Windows 7)

My printer, scanner and an external hard-drive are hard wired to the Desktop, and I would like to get to them and the desktop drives from the laptop, and similarly get to the laptop from the desktop.

Is this possible?  reading about seems to indicate it is, but I havent managed to get either PC to see the other or any devices yet.

All help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
