How do I answer emails from within a chain

How do I reply to an email in a chain, which is not the latest email in that chain? For example, BT Email will consolidate say 6 emails in a chain together under one heading in my inbox, let's say "John Smith 06". I can only reply to the latest email, which could have been sent to John Smith by Jane Brown. But I don't want to answer Jane Brown's email, I want to answer John Smith's original email. Am I missing something very obvious?

If you go to the "change view" setting at the right hand side and click once on "conversation view" it will stop the emails being grouped together and allow you to reply to which ever one you want.  

If you want to re-group them click once on the "conversation view" button.
