How do I set up a POP account Windows 10 and Outlook 16

Go to solution

I am trying to set up a new account but having problems. I have used the information from http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/44917 but it isn't working. There are no screenshots in the article so I'm putting the information in the screens I have but I keep getting 'We couldn't connect to the incoming (POP) server. The connection timed out'.

I have an IMAP account which I have removed from Outlook as I want a POP account. The reason for this is that I do not access my emails from different devices so I do not need my emails to synchronise, (which isn't working anyway!!!) so I want to go back to a POP account which I had previously to my PC being reset after a failed Windows Update.

I realise that an IMAP account is supposed to be better if my PC fails and I want to get my emails back but I have a backup regime so should only lose (if any) a weeks worth of emails.

Can anyone help me please with the settings I need to set up a POP account or explain why I'm not able to connect with the settings I'm using. These are the screens I am using in Outlook 16 to set up the accountfirst screen in Outlook 16first screen in Outlook 16message on trying to connectmessage on trying to connect

POP3 uses port 995 not 993 (that is the IMAP port)

You also need to untick the SPA box for outgoing mail.

Thanks for you advice Liquorice, it still timed out, with the same message as the last attempt. Then I ticked the box for incoming mail - 'this server requires encrypted....' and it did connect. So I now have a POP account set up.  Outlook is not showing any mail and nothing has come down to my PC using 'Send / Receive'.

However, I did create a pst file before removing the IMAP account. So can I add that to my Outlook account settings and copy / move the files to my POP account in Outlook?

I feel as if I'm on a winning streak against the machine but not quite there yet....

Yes, sorry, I missed that error in your settings.

Yes you can add the .PST file as previously described in your other thread and then move the folders/mails to the POP account folders. You could have actually used the .PST file when creating the POP account by ticking the box 'use existing data file' rather than creating a new one. However, now created just add it and move as necessary.

Thanks Liquorice, it sounded so simple and it was, opened the New Data File in Outlook, but although it is showing on the LH side that there are 31 items in the Inbox, they are not being displayed in the window on the right. All of my folders are there on the LH side but nothing displays on the right.

I haven't moved or copied anything from the new Data File Do to my POP account in Outlook  yet.

The pst file is displaying emails when open it in Kernel Outlook pst viewer and it is 186,513 kb.

Do  I need to do anything else to display the emails in Outlook?

No, they should just display as the other folders do.

It might be worth trying a PST repair https://support.office.com/en-us/article/repair-outlook-data-files-pst-and-ost-25663bc3-11ec-4412-86... but make a backup copy of the PST file first just in case.

Thanks for the update  licquorice, I have a copy of the original pst file and that is what I am using now.  The original is safe on an external drive - once bitten twice... etc., eh! I read somewhere about changing the View to view IMAP, but although the emails do indeed appear I'm not sure what the implications are for continued use in Outlook. Will my POP emails appear as well or do I have a problem with those if the view is for IMAP?

I still have no emails showing in my new POP account. I'll try sending myself a message.

Curiouser and curiouser!” I am feeling a bit like Alice in some other land than Wonderland....

I have the latest version of windows 10 and have just tried to set up POP 3 on the windows mail system.

Outlook mail > settings > manage accounts > add account >Other Account pop3 > entered one of my BT email addresses , user name, bt password for that account and signed in. Did not have to set up any ports or security options and sent that address a test mail without any problems.

Hmm, if you can view the emails in the added data file by selecting view IMAP, I would copy and paste the mails to where you want them in the new account and then delete the data file from Outlook.

@hammy30  You are talking about Windows10 and Outlook the mail service, this thread is about MS Outlook 2016 mail client.
