Re: How do I set up a POP account Windows 10 and Outlook 16

You're right but doesn't outlook 16 have the same automatic setup or does it only do it for IMAP.

You should never use the automatic setup on any mail client, it always uses the wrong settings.

Hi Licquorice, tried the Repair option from the link you sent, no joy. Still not receiving emails in my account. I've copied the emails over to my account from the pst file and removed that now.

Now, tried sending an email to myself - from my own account. Did this twice. The emails are sent from my account but are in my husbands Sent Items. See pic below for ref. I have not received either email in my account Inbox or in my husbands account Inbox - which is an IMAP account but I can change that if needed.

My email account is the Default account and I did change it in the email before sending to be sent from my account.

Indeed curiouser and curiouser.... shall I remove my hubbies account and see if that makes any difference. I'll back it up before removing.

Thanks for the reply hammy30. Did you already have a POP account set up in Windows Mail?

I'm using Outlook 2016 with Win 10. An IMAP account was set up by Microsoft for me as I had to download Office from the website and had problems setting it up on my PC (after a failed Win Update trashed my PC and I had to reinstall everything). In hindsight I would not let anyone set anything up for me again. I had a POP account before the PC problems  and wanted a POP again as I do not want the synchronisation of an IMAP account.

Outlook 2016 want to set up email as IMAP as a default. If you remove the IMAP account it does give an option to choose POP and this is where I am now.

First of all please either edit your screenshot or delete it as it contains your email addresses and this is a public forum.

Have you checked the mails haven't appeared in the spam or bulk folder?  As the account is now POP3, you will have to check that in webmail.

Sorry - thought I'd removed the emails but missed some obviously. I think I've blocked the picture now, didn't know how to edit it.

Nothing in the Outlook spam/junk folders. My account is the default but emails seem only to be going from and to my hubbies IMAP account.

I think it suggests there is something wrong with the setup of my Outlook account but I don't know what. I've tried a few variations and get a message that the account has been set up correctly, but there are no test messages being received into either account in Outlook but I do see them when I log into my BT web access.

I think I'm going to back up and remove my hubbies account and set up a POP account for him in Outlook and see how that works out.

Re: How do I set up a POP account Windows 10 and Outlook 16

Well, after much head scratching and reading various things online, I think I have a working POP account in Outlook 2016.

I  found that in File/Options/Advanced, Send and Receive, All Accounts my hubbies account was set as the account to receive emails for my account and I could not edit it. I tried various things and in desperation I removed every account but one for me. I reset up my account after removing his account and just now, after several failed attempts to get the account set up again - it has now worked and I have all of my previous mail from the copy/paste from an earlier pst file, plus new ones. They are still online in my BT mail account so none lost there as far as I can see. I'll tackle adding my hubbies account tomorrow. It's been a long day today..... but at least I think I'm winning against the machine.

Thanks Liquorice. I think it was opening various data files in Outlook that might have upset things as well as more than one mail account set up, but I did that to remove mine initially. I was going round in circles but removing and starting again has reset everything. I have this morning found that I had numerous duplicates of emails from yesterday and have removed those, just getting single emails today, so hopefully I'm on the home front. Now, just the other programs to get installed and sorted and I'm back to 'normal', if there is such a thing in computing eh! At least I am armed with information if I have to do anything like this again.

I certainly will not let Microsoft or BT have access to my PC again, they just set things up  without asking what you want set up and leave you without any idea of how it can be changed.

It will be long time before I update Windows to the latest version. I have stopped auto updates in Registry as it is impossible to do in the WU pane.

Thank you muchly for your help though.

Re your latest post (unable to quote at the moment).
Beware of Windows 10 1903 updates.

Things to do before you update are to disable your antivirus product completely.
You then reinstate afterwards:- or, can uninstall it completely, and reinstall afterwards.
The problem just doesn't end there, though, as there are further updates.
There's a new so called "quality" update which absolutely refuses to install on my laptop. (ok on desktop). The latest gossip on the blogs is that you should disable vpn before updating.....and then, the even latest gossip says that after install it messes up your vpn. So much for "quality" updates.

Glad you fixed the mail. It seems that the adviser forgot to tick the option to keep all data when installing the ISO file.
