Re: How do I set up a POP account Windows 10 and Outlook 16

Go to solution

Thanks for the heads up  Ribblelancs. I do not intend to install another WU anytime soon, the experience of  Win 10 1809 is enough to put me off updating ever - but no doubt Windows will force it at some point. At least I am better able to prepare for such an occasion now. I was using HP Recovery Manager (HPRM) and whatever I tried it wanted Admin account login - my account does have Admin access so i couldn't see what the problem was. I tried a copy of the files of C:/drive and E:/drive - where I store my main work files, not realising that HPRM is only interested in C:/ drive, that would have saved me half a day when it told me it could not find the target drive - which I now think was E:/ . I do have files on my external drive from that day. The other option was to save things like photos, emails music etc., which I now know is only Windows mail emails and anything Windows related. I think I do have some if not all of the C:/ drive in the first attempt but although in some folders it says there are thousands of docs I cannot see them. The later HPRM backups do have a recovery exe file, but as I mentioned no data in there! I won't be using HPRM again in a hurry either. Which is sad because I've always brought HP PCs because of this - but never had to use it before......all good fun at the end of the day eh!

Sounds like you have (?had) problems too, but I hope you overcome them.

Regarding the Windows 10 1903 update. I have installed it on three computers without any issues. The main thing to do is do NOT to manually search for the update.

Wait until it is offered in the update section. This means that Microsoft has ascertained as far as possible that your computer will install it without problems. It sits on its own and you have to make a conscious decision to install it.

Before installing the update it is best to disconnect any USB external hard drives or at least turn them off.

The update will install any further updates that are needed before the 1903 update is installed.

Depending on the computer it can take anything from a couple of hours to four or five hours to install.

You do not need to install it right away. Microsoft will only force the update when the last major update is coming to the end of its life, usually 18 months. If you choose not to update to 1903 you will still receive all the other updates relative to your present version of Windows.

Well, after much head scratching and reading various things online, I think I have a working POP account in Outlook 2016.

I  found that in File/Options/Advanced, Send and Receive, All Accounts my hubbies account was set as the account to receive emails for my account and I could not edit it. I tried various things and in desperation I removed every account but one for me. I reset up my account after removing his account and just now, after several failed attempts to get the account set up again - it has now worked and I have all of my previous mail from the copy/paste from an earlier pst file, plus new ones. They are still online in my BT mail account so none lost there as far as I can see. I'll tackle adding my hubbies account tomorrow. It's been a long day today..... but at least I think I'm winning against the machine.

Yes, it was a marathon effort and I do hope it helps others to sort out their similar issues. Over the last few weeks since my issue began I've read lots of posts on various websites that seem to come to an abrupt end with no real solution to the problem. At least I have tried to include each step I've made which I hope is helpful.
