I'm on a blacklist.. some sites won't load.

Go to solution

I'm a BT business user, and have been happy with the service. Over the last 2 months however, some sites are simply off limits from my connection.

my bank site is affected, ditto nespresso.com, from whom I order coffee. I have to use my home internet connection for these chores.

Traceroutes to the problematic hosts show enormous packet loss. (see below)

It appears that a chunk of the BT ip address space is on several blacklists.

Note - I do not have a static ip, but my current ip is 86.184.93.161 - here's what we get trying that in

http://www.mxtoolbox.com/SuperTool.aspx

Please sort this out BT. Please don't make me ring the "helpdesk"

Are you seriously suggesting that your bank is denying you access to their website because you're trying to reach them from an IP address that's on some email blacklist. (one of those you quote isn't even a blacklist as such - it's just a list of ISPs dynamically allocated IP address ranges...)

Sorry, but I don't believe that to be the case - I'm not doubting your problem, but I strongly suspect you've arrived at the wrong conclusion as to why.

re: your traceroute - no response is not the same thing as real traffic packet loss. I get similar results to you using ICMP traceroute.

tcptraceroute (or traceroute using TCP) however tells a very different story.

Hi.

The blocklist has nothing to do with your access to websites. You will notice that the blocklist contains IP addresses of BT dynamic IP address ranges. This is by design, and used as a system to help various systems protect themselves by spam. Users on dynamic IP address ranges should usually use their ISP mail servers (smarthosts), spam via botnets uses the IP address of the user - hence will be prevented from reaching various users/systems.

As Ian said - your bank access is not relevant to these blocklists - it will be something else, even a browser cookie corruption etc.

Typically in these sorts of failures, the initial thing to try is a router reboot/power cycle. Despite being dynamic IP ranges in use, these can stay with a user for months if nothing is reset/turned off etc. Sometimes the IP address seems to go "stale" for accessing different websites - I'm not entirely sure why this would happen, perhaps the routers in the network have some form of corrupted networking causing various problems like this.

"try a router reboot/power cycle"

of course I have tried turning it off then turning it on again, and thank you for your expertise.

I have also tried clearing cache, using different browser, different machines etc....

Whether the traceroutes and/or blacklist are viable I do not know for sure, but the fact remains I can not get to https://my.sjpbank.co.uk from work (ON ANY MACHINE), and it is NEVER a problem from my lowly virgin.net connection at home.

I will stick with BT for another month. If problems persists, I'm off.

They're both right. I'm in IT Security and deal with blacklists. We will block e-mail coming directly from an IP address that is assigned by an ISP to a Broadband user - that will include all the address ranges assigned by BT.

The reason for this is that machines infected with certain types of malware that creates spam will have their own e-mail engine and will send it out directly from the client PC on port 25. When you use BTIntenet.com or BTOpenworld.com e-mail you will send mail on this port to BT where it will be accepted (hence the need to go through the verification process from time to time). BT then forward the mail for you. This means you should not really see mail coming directly from the PC.

The reason for the websites not loading is some other problem - perhaps you could post the error messages you see when you try to go to them.

I don't get error messages. I get timeouts.

All that that shows is increased latency within yahoo.com

What the OP thought was packet loss at 213.120.176.178 wasn't.
