Impossible to set up a direct debit

Had first bill in for broadband. Followed instructions to set up a direct debit via automated system, that refered me to the website. Taken round and round in circles on that.                                                      put in call to BT who have taken my bank details and may of set it up, but I have no confidence at all in BT billing as I was initially offered a half price for six months offer, which was not honored until I got exceptionally cross and emailed BT Head Office. Even then they applied VAT which was NOT mentioned when I agreed to the deal! Then a curious bill arrived, which basically said BT owed me money, finally 3 months later this first bill that I have to pay. I am still not sure if the amounts are correct as there are curious 'pennies'.  Does not install confidence in me. When I have time I will pull out all the old correspondence.
