Incredibly High Latency and Low Download Speed

Been having a problem for about a week and a half now regarding the speed and the latency of my connection. We have always had problems but this is beginning to get a bit frustrating now.

One half of the problem is that the latency is extremely high, it is averaging around 1100ms between the homehub and the exchange in milton keynes a few miles down the road. The other half of the problem is that the actual speeds for both downloading and uploading are incredibly low. Averaging around 0.40megabits per second download and 0.02megabits per second for upload. Before this problem occured we were averaging around 7.50megabits per second and the upload speed was scaled up proportionally aswell.

I have been using speedtest.net to test the connection and then have done some trace routes to www.google.com and the issue is definitly between the homehub and the exchange in milton keynes. There are some trace routes below:

There hasnt been a change to the way our homehub is set up or to any of the devices that we connect to it. The only change that I can think of is there are some roadworks going on and maybe this could have damaged the line maybe?

I have since been onto pingtest.net to test my connection there and this is where the problem is, because not only have I got quite a high latency of 1235ms(on that specific test) but I have also got a packet loss of 15% out of 250 packets which is really not good. There is also jitter on the line of 548ms.

I also tried the speedtester.bt.com but it has just timed out about 5 times now so clearly thats not going anywhere.

Has anyone got any advice, really dont want to ring a call centre in a place ive never heard of just to be asked "have you turned it off and then on again?"

Regards,

Alex

Re: Incredibly High Latency and Low Download Speed

you are on adslmax and the btspeedtest figures look ok - speed 7616 with the correct profile of 6500 and download speed of 4200 probably due to people using net at peak time

Re: Incredibly High Latency and Low Download Speed

Yes I understand what youre saying but trying to use formula1.com for live timing and cannot use the internet. speedtest.net result shows 892ms latency and 0.03megabits per second download speed.

So to be honest really dont understand whats going on with the connection.

Re: Incredibly High Latency and Low Download Speed

you can check your exchange here for problems http://usertools.plus.net/exchanges/mso.php

http://usertools.plus.net/exchanges/?

http://btbusiness.custhelp.com/app/service_status

still looks like congestion on your exchange - a lot of people using the internet at the peak time on your exchange

Re: Incredibly High Latency and Low Download Speed

Tried the links which you gave me and no problems came up. I understand what you mean about peak times and the connection lowering because of that but like this morning its becoming un-usable in peak times. Theres not much point if I can only achieve a decent connection at 3 in the morning.

What youre saying about the peak times would increase the latency and decrease download speed. But it wouldnt mean that theres a substantial loss of 20% packets being sent?

Do you have any information or know of somewhere where I can report a potential fault or issue with local exchanges?

Re: Incredibly High Latency and Low Download Speed

Hi Alex,

Is there any chance you could post your line stats so we can see if there are any errors on the line?

Here are some steps: http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.php

Thanks

Re: Incredibly High Latency and Low Download Speed

Hi, Sorry for the late reply.

Over the last week about half the time it has been fine, but especially in peak times it dies down to the point where it is unusable. Especially at night between around 9-12 its pathetic cant do anything on it, and then again around the 2-4.

I know people say well its peak time your connection will be slower, but it is just unsuable in those times stated above.
