Infinity 2 speed 20mb slower than suggested

Go to solution

Have contacted BT support and filled in the little form but haven't really heard back, so thought I'd post a thread here as I'd love to hear other peoples experiences as well.

So long story short, BT Infinity 2 was the best deal and BT website seemed confident we would get 51.5MB downspeed. Today is the 10th day and we're still not getting anything above 28-32MB down. Not very impressed, I have to say.

Can you find out your IP Profile by running the speed test at http://speedtest.btwholesale.com and going on to do the "Further Diagnostics". Your IP Profile for both Downloads and Uploads should be displayed.

IP Profile for your line is - 33.11 Mbps

Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 20 Mbps

I am going to assume this can be changed, as a promise of 51.5MB when my line apparently cannot even get above 33.11 seems like a huge fat porkie-pie

the speed quoted at the time of order is an estimate of what you may achieve not a promise there are many variables affecting a line and there fore the actual speed achieved may be above or below the estimate the figure quoted is based on lines in your area and speeds achieved by them all services are sold as up to speeds

why would they give an estimate 20mb above what i could get?

http://i.imgur.com/jpIE3a5.png - i can't see any 'up to' here. and even if it did, surely that is still a lie if the maximum is 33!

even on BTs own speedchecker, http://i.imgur.com/Ai6332o.png it says that this speed is poor and could be improved.

[edited out, i now know what an ip profile is :)]

The IP profile is set to 96% of your sync speed.

There is an error for sure, it should not be showing up orange (http://i.imgur.com/Ai6332o.png) on the BT test site and should show all green!. Have you got anything running in the back ground while you are testing like BT Vision or P2P or Consoles, IPads, IPhones, DS3 etc.. cause they will affect your results and are you testing by ethernet to your Home Hub?. If you have tried this, reset your Openreach box for 15 seconds and turn off for 2 mins and turn back on again and your HH(do not reset your HH, just the white openreach box), just turn them on and off for about 2 mins and see if that makes a difference. Make sure when you do a reset, turn everything off, shutdown laptops, Vision, everything that connects to your internet then turn back on when done.

Please click on white star to the left and say thanks if I have helped you at all!. 🙂 Thank you. Some handy links Copy & Paste:-

Yep, been testing with my pc in the GigE port. I've turned the Wifi off on the Home Hub and I'll try your suggestions, thanks.

done it~ http://i.imgur.com/uycBbqs.png - http://i.imgur.com/ykAaqHa.png - http://www.speedtest.net/result/2847158134.png

Held reset until the lights went off on Openreach modem, unplugged it. Restarted HomeHub. Plugged Openreach modem in 2 minutes later. Ran speedtest, certainly no other programmes running in the back or foreground.

Looks like your IP Profile has been reduced. That may be because you disconnected the modem before powering it off.

I have found if I pull out the power plug on the Openreach modem first then the IP Profile is unaffected.

I've done a bit of reading up and think I understand how this IP Profile stuff works a bit better.
We did have a few brief power cuts last week that caused the modem and router to reset without warning. Could it have been this that limited the IP Profile to 33mb?
Is there a way to reset the IP Profile and hope there isn't another power cut while the connection re-stabilises?

ooor, did I miss something entirely and it could still be something else?
When the engineer left last Wednesday the speed was 28mb and it went up to 32mb over two-three days, then we had two power cuts. I didn't think anything of it at the time. It has been 28-32~ since.
