Infinity questions/clarification

Hi I am a BT customer - 2 telephone lines  - no broadband.

In the next few weeks was hoping to move over to fibre broadband Smiley Wink so I checked my area and it says accepting orders Smiley Happy however as always with BT theres a catch Smiley Frustrated openreach say I can have infinity but BT says it's not available.

So then I came across the post:

Your phone line may be connected directly to the telephone exchange and not to a local street cabinet.
Your line may be too far from the local street cabinet to have a stable BT Infinity service.

Questions regarding the above quote:

I am 250 metres from the exchange so I may be connected to the exchange (although I'm sure I'm in a cabinet) So how do I find out? and what difference does it make? e.g it makes no difference for adsl.

Too far from cabinet for fibre broadband??? don't they use fibre connection across the Atlantic!?!?!?

This is my last ditch effort before having to move over to Sky or Vermin Media.

Regards

Steve
