Intermittent connection, router freezing, massive speed fluctuation

Hi everyone,

Some issues been going on for a few months now.

18 months ago I was getting around 32mb download on my fibre broadband, with a Home Hub 5, but gradually it’s been getting worse, to a point where it averages around 14-15mb and a whopping upload speed of 0.5Mb. Then I noticed speeds down as low as 2-3MB, the fluctuation was getting more and more.

Reported to BT a few months ago and they sent me 3 new Home Hub 5 routers, I figured one has to work. I picked one and sent two back. Things continued exactly the same, speed fluctuations and drops in connections. Back onto BT again and they confirmed they could see the huge drops in speed and connection issues, engineer booked to sort the issue.

Engineer came yesterday, he replaced old socket and reset the line. He said I’m 800m from the exchange so that will affect speeds apparently, as can some interference from local industrial estate - however both of those things have been the same for years and years, never affected it before.

Engineer told me to expect drops in speed for 10 days or so while the line settles, which is fine, and not to restart or reset the router. So as expected speeds up and down a little, but the internet now just goes off completely. Blue light still on the hub, it’s almost as if it freezes. Can’t access the hub online to do anything, the only option is the restart the hub, or I have no internet.

Live chat with BT this morning and they said that they are aware there are still issues and it will be done by the 15th, which is great but what about in the meantime! They are now sending me the Smart Hub 2, not sure if that will solve the issue but worth a shot.

Be good to get the thoughts of the experts on the forum, I’d be grateful for any light you can shed on this.

Cheers,

Richard

I am sure the engineer meant 800m from the cabinet! If you were originally managing in excess of 30mbs down, you must be on FTTC.

In my case, the problem was the copper from the cabinet to the premises. The copper cable was damaged by a tree on the route from the pole to our 2nd floor flat. The engineers fitted a new copper cable from  the pole and now we're regularly on mid 70mbs.

During our wait for a repair, we were experiencing the same problems as you.

Hi

Sorry, yes I meant the cabinet lol. Fingers crossed it’s resolved soon.
