Is My BT Internet Connection Suitable For Next Gen Gaming?

Glad I found this post.

I've been experiencing the same thing with GeForce Now for a while now. Bad GFN network test results, stuttering etc. Also, general internet speed was initially 52mbps when I upgraded to Superfast last year, it's now around 47-48mbps which is actually underneath the guaranteed 50.

I want to get an engineer out haven't yet as I'm worried about the potiential £85 charge. The box on the wall does look a bit tatty, but wouldn't that cause other issues rather than just a slight drop in speed? Everything apart from GFN works perfectly. I'm worried they replace the box and speeds go back above 50 leaving me with the charge, but then GFN is still no better.

Do you know if any other ISP's routers are better for cloud gaming? As the speed's underneath the guarantee I think I could get out of my contract. I don't fancy spending hundreds on a GFN router and a modem. Happy you've got it sorted though!

Hi supa42, sorry for not replying sooner.

I have never used the GFN mode yet!   But have used GFN Network test as a sanity check and confirm even without GFN mode enabled my new router has hugely helped with GFN Network test results.

Not sure what uPnP mode does, just like much of the information in the manual for my new router.   It is all information overload for me and have yet to properly configure my new router to anywhere near its full potential.  The documentation regarding GFN mode seems to indicate that it is GFN capable devices which get prioritised and is not unique to GFN service, but relative to any cloud gaming service which supports uPNP.

Have been intending to update this thread showing how much of difference Shadow likes my new router but have been having many other issues, but things have changed a lot regarding these things last Monday for me and will update soon.

The benefits of using these high spec cloud gaming certified routers are being hugely under estimated imo.   For any gamer not just cloud gamers.

Thanks for getting back to me. Good to know that I wouldn't benefit from changing ISPs! Still, it's a shame it looks like I'm stuck with poor GFN performance without spending £100s on gear when I have near enough the recommended 50mbps.

To be honest you don't NEED a GFN Ready Router specifically.   You really looking for ANY router that has **-WRT firmware which provides a way to enable and disable "adaptive QoS" and can "prioritise" Ethernet devices and WiFi devices using Mu-MIMO.    This is really called "Gaming Mode" land not "GFN Mode" on my new fancy pants router.   GFN Mode simply adds Upnp prioritisation and other tweaks specifically for GFN service, which I rarely use.   But can confirm GFN Network Test ALLWAYS says my network is EXCELLENT with my new router even when just device is prioritised with "adaptive QoS" enabled..   Very low ping to Amsterdam DC (not sure if am currently using Frankfurt!?) With very low latency/jitter and solid ping on loaded unloaded network.

We need more users confirming makes and models of routers that are know to help.

I have not tested this and is just a suggestion as an alternative to a fancy pants GFN Ready Router

Asus 88U - which costs less money than a GFN Ready Router and even less than what I paid for Smart Hub and a Smart Hub 2 from BT Store.

There is no proper modem mode on anyy BT Smart Hub  or Home Hub, so if you buy a router that does have VDSL (RJ11?) connector then you will also need a modem.

Am sure the time you save posting here and on really bad support channels and time spent gaming, will hugely help you appreciate a better working local network and a better everything else you use it for and what anybody else is using it for.  No more pfaffing about.   More gaming.
