Lag spikes when playing games - wow and various xbox titles

Hoping someone on the forum is willing to give a helping hand as i have given up on BT callcentre where i only get taken through the same script every time and it is obvious that the person on the line have very limited if any technical skills other than reading back to me from their script.

I am connected through the Ottershaw exchange and getting estimated speed of 3 mb/s and when various speedtest i am normally between 1.8-2.7 mb/s

Actual downloadspeed is normally very much lower - recent BT speedtest shoved 599Kb/s but i have rarely seen actual speed over 400 kb/s

I wish i could try something that would give me faster broadband but Infinity is not going to come to my area soon...

my issue is that i randomly seem to be getting a big degradation in the service that makes it impossible to play any of the games the family likes to play - mostly World of Warcraft but also various Xbox titles.

It this point in time we have had problems for some three weeks and they only seem to get worse hence my attempt to get help through the forums.

The issue we have is that the speedtest seems ok, but the actual performance is awful with lagspikes and varying framerates in game that makes any play unbearable. Are there any solutions to this problem? I am using BT HomeHub 1.0 but connecting my computers (Mac's and Pc's) through a gigabit ethernet switch.

Grateful for any help

Re: Lag spikes when playing games - wow and various xbox titles

In looking a little deeper at this a lot of the network data coming from the BT network is actually quite poor but there also seems to be issues in the US. The server i play on is based in Los Angeles and as i get into that area it seems to time out at a node 12.129.199.182...having said that i am not an expert in interpreting trace route logs... My DSL information below

Re: Lag spikes when playing games - wow and various xbox titles

I have run lots of traceroute and the first hop is never less than a MS. Tried rebooting both my switch and the homehub but no changes to the first hop. Varies between 2-90 MS. Does this indicate something? Most of my computers are relatively new as is the switch.
