Landline Number Change

Go to solution

I recently ordered student broadband, but have been told I’ve been allocated a new landline number. Does anyone know if there is a way to contact BT to make sure I keep my landline number unchanged?

Who provides the existing service and number ? if you've joined BT you can transfer the number from the old provider, if it's BT to BT then you can't, it's a working line takeover, this needs done when the order is raised, you would of been asked if you have an existing number.

You can also request a renumber, there's a charge of £26 and no guarantee the renumber will get the requested number.

As it’s a student house I don’t know who the previous provider was and I don’t remember being asked about a current number but it’s possible that I could have said I did/didn’t have an existing number somehow without realising. If this is the case, can I change my answer if I call BT? To ensure that I keep the old number?

If the line is still active and your switch to BT hasn't completed, ring 150 and see what companies automated message replies, if it's BT you can't transfer.
One thing to note is you would need to cancel and then reorder, starting the process from scratch.

Either that or take the new number, then ask BT if they can retrive it and pay £26 for the renumber request.
