Re: Latency Variation (Ping Spikes) during online gaming.

Go to solution

I'm in south Wales.

There are a lot of threads here that aren't the same issue and I'm coming to believe that my issue is now only to do with Twitch, after they made some changes on my line (that didn't fix Twitch) has seemingly fixed ping spiking in games when watching a Mixer stream (1.45MB/s).

I use Battlefield 5 as a testing environment for real UDP / TCP traffic instead of solely relying on PingPlotter.

Here are two scuffed GIF's I quickly look from a recording of BF5 showing the network variation difference between Twitch and Mixer (Twitch 800KB/s and Mixer 1.4MB/s)

Twitch:

Mixer:

https://gyazo.com/31e7f056b6ce312768d110ac3d7b812b

As you can see the BLUE "Netw Vrtn" stays at between 1.4ms and 1.8ms during the Mixer stream and spikes up and down on the Twitch stream.

I'm adding some ping plotters of ONLY BT's network here too. The 7th Hop is BT's last node before it goes out to wherever it goes so the destination on these PingPlotters is within BT's network. I'll also put the Destination HOP's IP details so you can see it's a BT node.

IPGeoLocation_ofExitNode.jpg

Can't find any other contradictory information here to say it doesn't belong to BT so as far as I'm concerned it belongs to BT.

As you can see from the PingPlotter results this IP address is the destination IP and the last BT HOP.

Below is the Twitch Low Latency PingPlotter Result as you can see all over the shop max pings are pretty high compared to current.

BT_Twitch_PP.jpg

On the other hand the below is a PingPlotter showing a result while watching mixer Low Latency, which uses more bandwidth. (Don't know why the BT Hub stopped responding to ICMP.)

So yeah I guess this is an update now, since I tested like this,  this morning for the first time in a while. My issue is different from most peoples, and honestly, ping spiking when first starting a Netflix "stream" is standard, and you shouldn't really be surprised that it happens, for all those complaining that it does.

Anyway, time to get BT to monitor Twitch packets and compare them to Mixer packets and how they're interacting / being shaped within the network, OR to find out if it's a Twitch problem.

Currently testing YouTube Stream, seeing variance from 1.4ms to 5.8ms which isnt causing any issues or triggering any network issue icons in Battlefield 5.

So Executive Customer Tech Support are comming to the end of what they're able to do for me to fix the issue at the present time.

This happened today, after seeing the build in progress for about 2 months.

Wonder if trying the 300Mbps FTTP package BT has would be a soultion to the issues. Worth the risk?

Maybe it is. We'll see what Exec Tech can do.

It was a very lengthy process to fix but as we went to change to sky to try fix it BT offered to put in a new and separate line to our house which did finally fix it. Now ping is only high if someone’s doing a download which is great.

BT FTTP 300Mbps being installed on 10th December, will report back as to if this solved the ping issue.

I'm just gonna ask this question here instead of making a new thread.

Does anyone know if the Smart Hub 2 has Hardware Offloading?

or if the Smart Hub 2 is even capable of Software throughput of 300Mbps?

So we got FTTP today and are now on the 300/50 package for the time being.

Happy to announce, the end of the whole ping when streaming.

Highest jitter I see in Battlefiled 5 now is about 4ms, and thats not consistent either it's more around 1-2ms which keeps the network issue icons at bay and games feeling much better to play.

Lmao, FTTP is never gonna reach us, so guess I am stuck with jittery path of exile for league-start on the 13th.

Sorry to dredge this thread up but I've been suffering the same problems for about 2 months.

Anyone got anywhere?
