I had my first landline number issued by BT over 13-14 years agoat the address I still live in. This number has now been lost by Sky or Virgin Media as I moved to from VM to sky's new VOIP services. This is because when I was moving to sky I requested a number port from virgin media and that successfully happened. But the problem is Openreach missed 4 of my line installation appointments which resulted in me cancelling sky since I thought the engineer would come the first time round and also resulted in me having no internet or landline for a month as VM was already cancelled due to thinking Sky would've been active by my first appointment date. I furiously left Sky and joined back to virgin but had to start fresh. Now my landline number is lost and its really important for me to get this back as everyone has that number people back home have it. Please could you try see what has happened to it and check with openreach. I will even join BT if I have to and would be extremely grateful for this.
Solved! Go to Solution.
You will need to take up this issue with virgin/sky.
This forum is for BT consumer customers.
If your number is owned by BT Retail, and you are still living at the same address as when the number was first issued, then its normally possible to get your number back, by becoming a BT Retail customer.
First check that your number belongs to BT.
If you have a quick look at the OFCOM website :-
http://static.ofcom.org.uk/static/numbering/index.htm#geog1
and download the spreadsheet that contains your number range (note the numbers exclude the leading zero). The line in the spreadsheet will show to whom the range is allocated.
When you port your number out from BT, its not owned by the new provider, so if you attempt to port it again, it will revert back to BT Retail.
Yes it belonged to BT Retail and I still live at the same address when you first issued it to mr
Then you would have to move your phone service to BT Retail
Once the phone line is active with BT Retail, this can be checked by dialling 150 and getting the welcome to BT message, then that will be with a temporary number to start with.
You can then request a renumber back to your original number.
Once you are a BT Retail customer again, with an active BT number, then if there is any problem getting the renumber completed, then post back here.
Nothing can be done until then.
I read another forum from mitch2015 and how a moderator got back their landline number without joining BT the problem is that since I’m already mid contract with virgin I cant leave them without early disconnection fees
A moderator would not be able to help unless you are a BT Retail customer.
You may be able to cancel just the phone part of your Virgin contract, however if the phone number is that important, then simply place an order for a BT phone line. BT do not use any of the Virgin network, so the existing BT socket in your house will be re-activated.
As there is an existing old route, there may be a recuced installation charge.

The new line will not affect your existing Virgin Media phone line as they use a totally different network.
Reading the 3 year old post by mitch2015 the number was retrieved only after he moved landline back to BT
