Manually assigning IP addresses on Smart Hub 2

Hi there.

With previous ISP's routers and with previous purchased routers - such as the cracking ASUS range, you can manually assigned a static IP, and the router locks that down and ignores DHCP.
The router then lists the new static IP for that device immediately and assigned the static IP when the router is rebooted, or the IP lease expires.

I always like to lock down IPs so I can see which devices are using my network.

As a new BT customer with my new Smart Hub 2 I have tried to lock down my IP manually, I save the page and the device still is listed as the old DHCP one.

Do I have to wait for each DHCP lease to expire to see any static IP change on the Smart Hub 2, or am I missing something?

Thanks.

Cheers

Re: Manually assigning IP addresses on Smart Hub 2

What you are doing is not true static IP addressing, that can only be achieved by setting an IP address on a device itself. Doing it on the hub is address reservation and by definition if it is the hub giving out the IP address it will be done via DHCP. It will, however, always give the same address to the device.

However, having just tried changing an IP address on my hub and setting it to reserve that address, it would appear that the functionality doesn't appear to work as the change isn't saved as you have discovered.

Re: Manually assigning IP addresses on Smart Hub 2

The DHCP pool is between 192.168.1.64 - 192.168.1.253. As already stated, to set a static  IP address you must do so on the device itself
For example if you want to allocate a static IP address, you should choose one between 192.168.1.1 - 192.168.1.63 (outside of the range of the DHCP pool) on the device itself, once you have done this and established a connection to the hub, any DHCP allocated IP address previously used will still show up in the table of devices but will be greyed out to show that it is not connected. You should now be able to remove the unwanted device from the list by clicking on the Remove button

Edit: If you decide to go down the road of static IP, I strongly suggest you manage all of your static addresses carefully to ensure you don't try and allocate the same address to more than one device

@licquorice Yes, that is what I am finding. It should set that IP for the device and save the setting. It doesn't.

I already have a few devices set manually and it's a faff to do it that way. Setting it via the router is far easier.

I get what you say about the router way not strictly being setting static addresses, but it has the same effect..........if it works.

Re: Manually assigning IP addresses on Smart Hub 2

I can only assume that once allocated dynamically the SH2 then does reserve the address, just that you can't allocate the address yourself. Clearly it is expected to be able to enter an address and save it but the functionality just doesn't appear to work. Yet another flaky function of the SH2.

I'll flag it to the mods to see if the hub team have an answer.

I've successfully moved devices from DHCP to static on my SH2. Perhaps you should try a factory reset

Re: Manually assigning IP addresses on Smart Hub 2

@Anonymous thanks, but really I should not need to go to that trouble.

You should be able to assign IPs on the router for any IP range. If the Smart Hub is working as designed, then it's the only router I have that used works this way out if the box. That's with either ISP provided routers or bought.

I know about duplicate IPs.

I've tried both within the DHCP range and outside and neither will save.

I guess I could try a factory reset @Anonymous , but I've barely owned the unit.

It was  brand new last week.

I think I will raise this as a bug as @licquorice suggests. The fact he sees the issue as well means it's repeatable.

Unfortunately there is no mechanism for raising bugs directly.
