McAfee True Key problem

Go to solution

How can I uninstall TrueKey? It was installed through BT as an add-on to my BB deal but I can't find any trace of it on my laptop. As posted earlier I'm pestered by a McAfee pop-up and have already uninstalled BT Virus Protect but it's still there. I just want to get rid of anything McAfee.

Have a look at this link.

Have a look at this link regarding removing BT Virus Protect and in particular the bit about using the McAfee removal tool if you haven't already done that.

https://www.bt.com/help/security/anti-virus-software/i-don-t-want-bt-virus-protect-anymore--how-do-i...

You may want to consider downloading and running CCleaner which is free to use. Use the default settings and run the "registry cleaner" and the "custom clean". This should clear out any rubbish left behind by McAfee

Thanks for that I'll give it a go. But can't understand why there's no trace of TrueKey on my laptop.

Re: McAfee True Key problem

I don't use TrueKey, in fact I wouldn't use anything to do with McAfee because their stuff invariably causes problems at some point, but my understanding is that it is a browser extension and a program.

If you did have it installed, you may have already removed it when you removed the other McAfee rubbish that you had on your computer.

You should however check the browser to see if it is still there.

McAfee popup

Go to solution

Have posted before on a McAfee 'Total Protection' pop-up that is proving a nuisance (understatement). The only McAfee products I have are the BT versions of Virus Protect and True Key. I tried uninstalling with McAfee MCPR uninstaller but that didn't  do the job so I used Windows to uninstall VP and as I could only see True Key in CCleaner program list I used that. I still got the pop-up. The I found that TK was a Chrome extension so I removed it. I still have the pop-up. Has anyone managed to get rid of this pop-up and if so how? I really object to paying McAfee £30 for a program I don't want just to get rid .

Re: McAfee popup

I have moved you post onto your original thread to keep everything together and to allow other who may wish to assist see what you have tried already.

Where are you getting this pop up. Is it in your browser or is it in your taskbar at the foot of your screen?

Have you checked to see if it is a preinstalled trial app that came with your computer and it is now nagging you?

If you had it as an addon in Chrome it has probably carried over into Edge because Edge is now more or less the Chrome browser in disguise and you can have it set to sync with Chrome.

Make sure you have deleted it from both browsers.

If you have deleted any addon that was installed in your browser you may need to do a reset of the browser. Be aware that if you do that you will probably lose your bookmarks so make a back up of them first.

Re: McAfee popup

Thanks again. I've removed every visible trace of McAfee from my laptop. Removed both BT Virus Protection and True Key programs (using the MCPR tool) and extensions where they appeared in browsers and have uninstalled Chrome  (as pop-up seemed to appear when I was using this browser). have also changed my IP address but still get the pop-up. Seems to triggered by tapping the touchpad but not every time (thanks goodness). As I write the pop-up has appeared again.

Did you run CCleaner's clean up tools? If not try running them now. You could also try downloading and running ADWCleaner which will remove any unwanted toolbar addons PUPs that are on your computer.

Re: McAfee popup

By CCleaner clean-up tools, did you mean the uninstaller beacause that's what I used. I could only see TrueKey in the CCleaner program list. Correction to my earlier post I ran McAfee MCPR but in the small print it says it will only remove files needed to re-install.

In CCleaner run the "custom clean" by running Analyse and then "run cleaner"   and "registry" by "Scan for issues." then "Fix selected issues".

It is also worth clicking on the "Tools" button the "startup" to see what is starting when you start up your computer.
