We have two laptops running the BT Netprotect McAffee Antivirus and a do a manual scan on each machine weekly.
Today on both machines the Scan goes straight to 1% completed and then does nothing at all - I've left if for hours and it gets no further.
What's more, when I go on to the status screen on Windows Security Centre - it says that McAffee is "unavailable".
Does anyone have any thoughts on what may have happened and how to resolve this?

Try uninstalling it using this guide along with the BTNetprotect/McAfee removal tool after a restart and then reinstall. This might resolve your problem.
