Another quirk of the "new" and "improved" webmail system is that - you can reply to an email but it still appears emboldened (like you haven't read it) but there is a looped arrow to denote you have replied.
Then, shazam, refresh the page and the emboldening goes from the original email - BUT - the curly arrow denoting you have replied goes also. Looks like a coding and server response time problem. One of many that have appeared with the "new" and "improved" email system. Frankly, BT or its directors/and/or/shareholders should hang their heads in shame. However, these are different times and they hide below the parapets hoping we will all go away but that our bank accounts will still be accessible to them.
I suspect they are listening but the question that needs answering is why was this released when it clearly wasn't working.
There have been comments in this forum that people were involved in beta testing and did make those that need to know aware of the problems but were ignored.
Based on very personal experience with BT over the years ignoring people who have problems seems par for the course so I believe the comments.
I have got extremely annoyed with people here when they suggest we find work arounds (and to them I sincerely apologise) but honestly when using an email client (in my case MS Outlook) all problems, well except one, seem to have gone away.
I would honestly suggest you investigate this. It took me an afternoon to do this and it was worth it.
Believe me you'll never get an answer from anyone at BT just the run around.
Saying that when I first had a problem and made a phone call to BT a young man who when I said that I had MS Outlook which I wasn't using any longer, did say to me, take my advice and use it.
I have often wondered if he knew more than he was willing or permitted to say.
I think what I find most annoying about the new design is how counter-intuitive some things seem. Who'd have thought you get to settings by clicking on your email address? And not onto a star, or dots, or even a sign saying 'settings' as you do with other pages. Why can't you mark something as a safe sender when you're still in SPAM? These pages have a 'language' - which BT clearly plans not to speak.
Oh, and what does BT have against non-alpha-numeric characters? Can't use them in passwords, can't use them in folder names. It's almost as if years of cyber security (and html coding) have simple never happened.
Others have said this, but we have stepped back to the Millennium with this design (actually, I'm surprised it accepts dates after 1999!).
@Jules68 Once I knew to clock on arrow next to User name that was it. That process was logged in the memory bank and was nothing to make an issue about.
Are you somebody who is unable to cope with any slight change no matter what it is.
Making an issue about trivial points gives that impression

Thunderbird is a free Mozilla (Firefox) email client. It is free and cross platform. Google it, take a look and see what you think. My wife and I are using it on Windows 7, Windows 10 and LINUX. Works fine.

We don't have MS Outlook so are there any other email clients that get around the problems? I would also object to spending money when we are (in effect) already paying for a service.
Many free ones including Thunderbird, Claws Mail, EmClient etc etc

If you do use an email client, eg Thunderbird, make sure you set it up right at the start with IMAP settings, NOT POP3!
IMAP will ensure all your current folders are replicated in the client, POP3 will only replicate your current 'Inbox'.
This may be of help...
Well I prefer POP3 for one very important reason, I do not trust BT with the security of my emails. Based on recent events.....I rest my case m'lud.
Given the problems and the reports from various people that they have missing items I prefer to maintain my own security. However each to their own.
For those not sure what we mean do check this out before setting your system IMAP or POP3. Once set you cannot switch to the other I think it's true to say. Please correct me if I'm wrong on this.
