Really? So why did all my webmail folders sync without making any changes to the default settings when I created a test account to check my solution for @Stephen5000 then?

Under IMAP you can 'see' all your BT Web Mail folders and their contents when you are on line - if you don't set it up to download and sync folders however these will not be available if you go off line. You can also set up Thunderbird only folders and copy mail into those - they will only exist for you on your machine and will not be mirrored into BT Mail. Did you go off line and check your folders were still all synced? - Of course if you followed the Thunderbird Instructions about downloading and syncing under IMAP they will be all there when you go off line.
When I use Thunderbird (no downloading) everything is 'there' as it was in BT Yahoo - only slightly quicker - and of course vastly quicker than in BT Mail.
I think you are offered, when you first set-up Thunderbird, the opportunity to set-up the download of some or all folders and sync them when on line, but the default is not to do that.
@licquoricewrote:You can create the account again in Thunderbird as an IMAP version of the account and just drag and drop the folders to the new account.
I think I may attempt to do this but have fallen at first hurdle! How do I create the account again in Thunderbird? Can't see how to open a 'new' Thunderbird window so I can 'register' a new address. Bet you wish you'd never mentioned it now LOL

You'll be in Australia soon at this rate!

If you already have the account as POP3 in Thunderbird, just go to Tools > Account settings and at the bottom of the left hand pane Account actions > add mail account. If you enter your name, email address and password it will auto setup as an IMAP account.
Yes when I transferred over the contacts I was taken aback by the number of columns and as you have said one listed as "government ID", theres another listed as "sensitivity". The total number of columns with a name given to the column is 92. I wonder why anyone thought this was necessary and seems to have been imported in this UI without a lot of thought.
Thanks Jules 68 for the info about redirecting my BT Mail to gmail. At first I thought I’d fallen at the first hurdle as I work on an iPad and the layout and functions are different. However, my partner has an iMac and he was able to access my email on that and follow your instructions. Now all is hunky dory - my Search function has been restored, my Sent folder lists emails in order of Recipients rather than all by me and I can use bold, italic and underlining when composing emails -until the next problem arises.
