Totally agree, it's hopeless, complicated and not fit for purpose, I'll revert to Thunderbird
Just realised that when I got the 'popup' style I was using one of my sub accounts - just checked and that seems to have been migrated as it doesn't have Yahoo in the logo - but my main account and a couple of other sub-accounts are still with Yahoo - curiouser and curiouser!
I seem to remember some way in the dim and distant past when we were originally promised the migration from Yahoo to BT Mail that there were to be no sub-accounts - is that true?
Re No Tabs in new mail. The way to work around this is to duplicate the tabs in chrome. Not sure if you can duplicate in Edge. In which case copy and paste the url in more windows. Also you can open as many virtual desktops and have as many number of emails open.
Bit more messing about but you can have multiple emails open from the one email all at the same time.

BT are in the process of migrating BTYahoo email accounts onto the "new" BTMail email system.
This is being done on an individual account basis so it is possible that a sub account gets migrated while the "main" account does not at the same time.
You can not ask for it to happen but all BTYahoo accounts will eventually be migrated.
When the last BTYahoo to BTMail migration took place in 2014 the main account and all its sub accounts were migrated at the same time.
On the BTMail system, you get 11 email addresses. They are not classed as main account and sub accounts. Unfortunately the BT website seems to be undergoing maintenance so I can not post a link but if you search for "How do I create and activate new BT Email address" it will explain the different types of BT email accounts.
Yep, I think we'll all be abandoning the new BT webmail (those that can, of course) and using mail app on phone, or outlook. I can't believe this was ever user tested, it's rubbish.
Like others I'm finding it unacceptably slow and how do you find unread emails if you select no preview pane? Can't see the option.
I'll be reverting back to Thunderbird which automatically opens a new tab when you open a new email so that you're able to flick between them quickly and easily. Another problem I've found is that once an email is opened in another client (T'bird, WindowsMail etc.) then it disappears from BTMail whereas before the "upgrade" it was moved to the Trash folder and was still available for about a week or so - handy if you'd accidentally deleted one in the client.
Can't imagine why if you were using Thunderbird previously you would even consider using the abomination of webmail!
Confused I have never used Thunderbird and have no idea what that is. Apart from Virgil and his Thunderbird of course
