Moved 0.8 miles down the road, internet speed appalling

Go to solution

Although I lived in a village Speedtest.net would report 5 Mbps with ~50ms latency and I could get download speeds of 700KB/s in practice too. After moving 0.8 miles to the next village down I get almost 100ms ping and 0.7Mbps download.

I tried connecting via LAN to make sure it wasn't exclusively a WiFi problem. I hooked the router into the test socket. I tried using an older router I had (BTHomeHub2), all with no improvement.

http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange_search tells me that both postcodes belong to the same telephone exchange.

Any other things I could do before trying my luck with technical support?

Hi pucilowski,

As john46 has said, you will stand a much better chance of getting help on here than you will from India.

In addition to the information requested by john46 to help you, I would make the following points.

When you say "down the road" do you mean further from the exchange ?

Do both villages share the same green street cabinet ?  If you don't know, or if you have taken your old number with you, you can get a good indication by entering phone numbers for each village here :- https://www.btwholesale.com/includes/adsl/main.html.

It does not mean the phone line follows the most direct route.

The quality of the line could be different up to the properties and within them.

The CL's and mods on here have a great record for solving problems.

Best regards,

I have a BTHub4 which has little ADSL connection information so I plugged in my BTHomeHub2. Microfilter plugged directly into test socket, router plugged into that. No other devices plugged into telephone sockets.

ADSL line status

https://db.tt/f45POq1X

BT Speedtest

https://db.tt/tlxmTpod

I cannot do the Quite Line Test as I do not have a telephone handset to use.

That's 0.8 miles further from the exchange.

ADSL Checker (current address)

https://db.tt/4Si4U1hU

ADSL Checker (old address, used to get 5Mbps)

you are getting about the maximum speed you can obtain for your line attenuation you are 4.6km from your exchange and with you being on the default noise margin there is no room for any improvement

Re: Moved 0.8 miles down the road, internet speed appalling

I'm back with worse internet than ever. I get around 30 KB/s or 0.25 Mbps according to the BT Wholesale speedtester. If I try to use my BTHomeHub2 it won't connect to broadband full stop so I can't output recent ADSL information.

Could a BT engineer be possibly of any help?

Can you post the adsl stats from your router and run btspeedtester if possible

there is no reason why the HH2 cannot show stats even with a slow connection without the stats there is no way to tell what is wrong with your connection just for information there is no such thing as a BT Engineer the engineers work for Openreach

If the HH2 doesn't connect to broadband, period then it won't show any ADSL information. How would it?

The BTHub4 on the other hand doesn't have a page to display ADSL information.
