My neighbour's FTTC speed is 3 times faster and they're further away!

Go to solution

We live in the sticks about 1.2km from the nearest cabinet. The overhead cable comes down the length of our road from the cabinet and we get a max FTTC speed of 19.4Mbps according to BT's adslchecker (actual speed around 16), whereas our neighbour who lives 300m further down the road (i.e., further from the cabinet) has a max speed of 30.2 according to the adslchecker (actual speed 59 - confirmed visually and via thinkbroadband.com).

How can our neighbour be further down the line and get nearly four times the speed? We're both on BT infinity, but I'm looking at the theoretical values on the adslchecker as well actual achieved speeds (see below).

Does this suggest some sort of fault between the pole and our house and how do I get someone to investigate?

Many thanks,

Steve

Are you sure you're both on the same cabinet?

suggests either different cab or cable from cab is not running the way you think

There is no way anybody is going to get 59M at 1.2Km from the cabinet.

I notice the OP included his max observed speed yet not his neighbours.😃

Yes, adslchecker confirms same exchange and I can trace the overhead wires all the way from the cabinet to the pole outside our house where one wire goes across to our house and the other continues down the road where it again splits at a pole outside our neighbours and goes into his roof.

His home hub says 59 and it's confirmed by the thinkbroadband site. Ignoring the actual speed, why does adslchecker say that he gets 30 to my 19 (theoretically) when he's further down the line?

it's not the exchange that matters it is the street cabinet to which you are connected  you can see from graph that at 1.2km you are not going to get almost 60mb connection speed

Ah, be nice!

The reason I don't have his max observed is because I don't have his phone number and with just his postcode, you don't get the full stats off off adslchecker. You can check for yourself!

I'm just trying to get some thoughts on how his speed can be so much faster than mine when he's further down the cable run from the cabinet. Does it indicate a fault in the bit from the pole to our house?
