Apart from what has already been said about the distance from the cabinet, no two connections are exactly the same. Your line could have aluminium cables at some point or there could be more joints etc than your neighbours line which all affect the signal being transmitted down the line.

Thanks gg30340. If it is something like aluminium cables or more joints, would openreach do anything about that if I asked them? It does seem a bit unfair/odd for someone further away to have a connection which is at least 2 (if not 4, if you're willing to believe my original post) times faster. If so, how would I contact them?

No. Openreach would not do anything about it just to get you better speeds. They would only replace or repair if there is a fault, ie no broadband or phone or if you were not able to attain your guaranteed minimum speed.

Thanks gg30340, that's really helpful and I suspect that's the problem.

I guess I'll just have to hope a problem occurs at some point along the line that means they come out and fix the issue though I suspect that might mean we end up with more joins rather than fewer.

Probably best to hold out for 5G I suspect...

Thanks again, I really appreciate your help.

It would still be interesting to see the router stats from your neighbour, whilst it is possible he may be getting slightly better speeds than you, there is no way he is getting 59M at 1.2Km from the cabinet.

He definitely is!

I can't ask him to post his stats, but I saw it for myself and the thinkbroadband website confirms it. (The same website gets my connection speed dead on, so I've no reason to doubt it). Even if you don't believe me, BT's own adslchecker shows that he has at least 50% faster speeds than me and he's 33% further away!

I wasn't looking for an argument, but I'm grateful to the one person who has responded positively and it sounds like it's probably to do with the cable type and joins that's reducing my speed. That's all I was after - a plausible explanation.

If anyone else has anything positive or helpful to say, I'd be glad to hear it.

Its the laws of physics, he can't get 59M at 1.2Km from the cab, I barely get that at 300/400 metres. He must be connected to a closer cabinet to get that speed.
