If you go further back in the comments, you'll find some information from one of the gurus/sages whose user name is gg30340 that might help with navigation etc.
Out of interest, have you recently had the new version thrust (polite) upon you, or are you discovering new features?
Definitely thrust upon, as I had no issues with email until the latest iteration.
Increasingly frustrated at being unable to compose replies to emails received because the cursor either freezes or the time lag between typing and the text appearing is unbearable. Tried all sorts including clearing cache on multiple occasions but to little avail.

Have you tried composing off-line from the webmail?
I know you shouldn't have to, but I always do when filling in web page forms.
How often do you fill in some long form, submit it and it doesn't work. You also have a copy held on your PC for reference
Compose it in a text editor like Notepad or Wordpad in Windows 10 then copy and paste it back into the BT boxes.
Opinion is divided on this very long subject, but you might do yourself a favour by using an e-mail client (Outlook etc.)

Cursor freezing can be down to many things (too big a subject to cover here). It might be worth trying another browser. I used to rate Firefox over the Microsoft offerings like Internet Explorer or Edge, but the new Edge (downloadable) isn't bad at all. The old Edge was very heavy on memory and lots of things used to stop working.
BT must be ruing the day they came up with the decision to change the layout and function of the webmail, but they just like change. How many times have they changed the corporate colours and logos?
So...
...how do I change this dire system so when on deleting an email, it automatically takes me to the next newest rather than (pointlessly) the next oldest email?
There is no option to specifically do that but if you go into the settings which are found by clicking on your username at the top right, then go to Mail there is an option to "view next mail after delete/move" which you can tick or untick.

That's a timely reminder with this thread approaching 80 pages. Webmail was never the best way to handle email. A client such as Thunderbird is more efficient, more intuitive, more reliable and more secure; webmail is an inferior tool, like a hammer to put in a screw.
That doesn't excuse BT's webmail but it does offer a way to avoid it.
After 77 pages and 777 posts still no real progress from our post 12/12/2018 - the wheel goes round and round but still returns to '' it wasn't broken so why did they try to fix it''

It's so long ago that it could be included in the GCSE History curriculum, but it was necessary to fix it to get free of Yahoo; the problem is that hasn't been done very well. Stop fretting and try Thunderbird would be a good move.
