New BT Mail Security

Sorry if this is a daft question but Im not that techie 

Still getting used to the new BT Mail and just noticed that when I open some mails on my PC via my Google Chrome browser they show differently in the browser header.

They all show BT Webmail - Google Chrome and then the address below eg https://email.bt.com/mail/index-compose.jsp?type=preview&uid=etc etc

BUT some are prefixed with a Not Secure sign rather then the secure padlock sign , in fact the mail announcing the new BT Mail service from BT was shown as not secure ?

Is there a reason for this and is it a concern please ?

It is disappointing that you haven't received reply on this.

I have a friend who uses email.BT.com for her emails and she noticed the 'insecure' message and that the padlock had gone.

She spoke to BT who told her to using Microsoft Edge, rather than Chrome - it has made no difference.

If she opens emails from contracts the Padlock is there. As soon as she opens an email from some body not in contacts, for example from BT, the padlock goes and it says insecure, and stays that way until you logout and log back in and exactly the same routine happens.   This the same on Chrome as it is on Edge.

We have cleared all cache and cookies, checked for updates, checked anti-virus and Defender are on and happy, run CCleaner, but the problem persists.

This is a particularly poor situation for people who are not  confident with IT and are always being told to check websites and emails for scams. The fact that BT's advice was of absolutely no help  has just compounded the matter.

Any advice on how to solve this would be appreciated.

There is no way to 'solve' it. Have you considered that the reason the insecure message is there is because the message is, in fact, insecure. I.e it probably contains images or other elements that aren't secure.

Have you clicked on the padlock to see what information it gives you as to why the site is not secure?

It continues to show as insecure because the page has not changed, only the email within it. If you refresh the page it will go back to showing secure.

When I first enter/log in to webmail its secure showing but as soon as I click on a message in my In Box and that opens I get the Not Secure sign ?

When i right click on the not secure message it reads  ''Your connection to this site is not fully secure.Attackers may be able to use images you are looking at and trick you into modyfying ''

Refreshing , by signing in and out makes no difference.,

When I search sites via my Chrome browser I get the secure padlock so thats ok

Bit Strange , ?, any ideas if this is a problem please ?

Once you have opened any mail that was insecure, the padlock symbol will remain. If you go back to the inbox and refresh your browser, it will show secure again until an insecure mail is opened.

Ah thanks for that .

So by process of elimination in my In Box all the messages that I open that trigger the insecure status seem to be bulk type messages from large organisations such as Sky, BT , Amazon etc , maybe by their nature they come in without protection ?

If so Im guessing its not a big problem ?

Another quick question please , how are you refreshing your mail , do you have to log out and back in again ?

No, just click the refresh button in your browser.

Oops yes found that but it makes no difference , only by logging out and then back in does the status return to secure until you click on an insecure mail .

So back to my initial concern , are these bulk mails from large organisations that trigger insecure a problem for the Bt Mail users insecurity please ?

To refresh your email go to the menu bar at the top of your email list and you will see a circular arrow. Click on it.

The insecure status is usually  caused by the email having a picture or some other element in it.  If you click on the padlock in the address bar it will tell you what is insecure. 

When you go to your next email it will show as insecure because the browser page has not been refreshed. Once you refresh the browser page, how it is done depends on the browser, it will show the locked padlock again.
