You're right, got myself confused. Always did with snr and snr margin, mainly as you say due to the way it's reported by most routers 🙂

In the previous example the SNR is 40dB. A speed requiring a minimum SNR of 34dB (a safety margin of 6dB) is selected, meaning the SNR could drop to 39, 38 etc due to noise fluctuations without the need to drop the connection. Hence stability. An even bigger margin allows for even bigger SNR fluctuations.

Some modems report the margin but label it as SNR which just seems plain wrong.

Happy to be corrected on any of this of course if wrong, but from reading many sites and posts that seems to be the way things work to me.

... and I do appreciate the single figure stats are simplified averages from across the different frequency bins. Nothing is ever as simple as you might think!

I was contacted by NeilO Last Thursday, I don't know the precise details of what was done, but it seems I was effectively on a 1 meg product...

Sync instantly(!) went back to 7616 of my previous provider, and has been nice and stable to boot, Many thanks Neil.
