My Public IP appears as Infonet Corp Services when assessing IP address / speed tests online. Typically followed or proceeded by BT Central Plus. Located in London. I am nowhere near .
As a novice here - would this be expected ? Thanks.
Solved! Go to Solution.
A good few years back BT purchased the company Infonet along with their range of IP addresses and it would appear that they are being used by BT.
The London location is where you leave the BT network and join the World Wide Net.
@gg30340 Thanks for this. So do these details alter ?, for instance if you didnt use Infinity you used a different BT package?
Also, why would source IP Differ regularly? for example sometines I get a 65. 20 xx adress listed as origintaing source and others a 212.82.xx variant and then sometimes I get my full public adress : 165.120.15x.xx including the specific machine I'm on listed ??
Would love to unravel this mystery!. Thanks.
@licquorice @Webby Thanks for responses.
I'm confused , I do understsnad that my public IP would change each time my hub is turned off / on and I'm allocated a new one.
But... what about the question about differing source IP adresses as highlighted(with respect to sent emails) - really dont understand this at all - can you explain at all or help really appreciated .

Do you turn the hub off regularly as this is not a good idea & would very likely reduce you speeds as the system that monitors the stability of your line (DLM) will think the line is unstable & reduce speeds to stabilise the line?
The hub is designed to be left on 24/7 and if possible that is what you should do but there are often occasions when it needs to be turned off or reset.
You would need to be repeatedly turning the hub off and on in a short space of time for to DLM to reduce line speed. Turning it off once a day or now and again would not cause DLM to take any action.
The source address of sent emails is the address of the mail server, which is not just one machine but a complete farm of machines that may be in different geographic locations for security and diversity. You should never get your own public IP address unless you are using your own SMTP server.
@licquorice Thanks , it' s beginning to sink in. But need some further wisdom - Given what you said however, what concerns me is if I send email via Outlook / Ipad / Iphone - within the header is my public IP address & "name" the specific machine I'm using . Is this regular ? I've pasted a header below of an email I sent to my Gmail account & cc to BT account from pc - outlook. Then below that header is an email sent from IPAD that contains also, my actual local /system device IP !? . Appreciate your thoughts.
