Openreach/BT Infinity Modem/Router Box Alternatives

Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone has had any success with any of these boxes as alternatives:

  • SMC smc7800a/vcp
  • ZyXEL P-871M
  • Technicolor TG789n
  • ZyXEL P-870HW-51a v2 (Wired or Wireless)
  • Draytek Vigor 2750n
  • Billion Bipac 8200n
  • Fritz!Box 7390

With the issues people are having im looking for a replacement modem or all in one box.

So far i have heard ok things about the Draytek, but it seems expensive!

Thanks in advance!

Sam

You may be interested in this thread... there's a good picture of the Draytek wall mounted in message #10

As the OR modem problem seems to have been solved for most users do you really need to go to the expense of a Draytek?

Unless there is a need for you to see the modem stats a good router would sort you out.

See this thread.

Re: Openreach/BT Infinity Modem/Router Box Alternatives

While I understand that most good cable routers will prob replace the HH3 and have actually looked into this my self, im wanting a cheap way of replacing the Open Reach Modem more as this is the route of most problems, they seem to be breaking very often!

There must be an alternative to the modem only - the HH3 i am happy with for the most part!

Thanks for your reply!

They seem to have beaten the overheating problem especially if it is wall mounted. Mine is one of the originals and hasn't dropped connection since fitting in April.

I know of no one who has had problems when it has been wallmounted as that is the way it was designed, hence the screw mounts on the underside.

Re: Openreach/BT Infinity Modem/Router Box Alternatives

Sorry to contradict you pippin

I'm on my second modem (the new variety with a white power supply and lead) - the first was wall mounted and was changed because my broadband kept dropping out - it hadn't got hot!

Saying that - today I've already had 5 dropouts - of course when he changed the modem it was nice weather - the last few days have been wind and rain - and we've got a overhead service! - so it may not have been the modem at fault - it's just easier to change that than do any proper investigations!!
