Phone shows ‘Line in use’

My BT phone shows “Line in use’ - it isn’t. Tried calling the number and comes up with engaged tone. Can anyone advise how to clear it? Started following a recent call which wasn’t answered, went to answer phone but no message left.

First unplug the phone, then dial your number from a mobile and see if it still shows busy.

If the line does not show busy, then there is a problem with your phone.

If it still shows busy, make sure that the BT Home hub, and anything else that is connected to the line, is also unplugged, then try again.

Thanks for the reply. I unplug the phone and call on mobile, do not get engaged tone. The phone is new, sounds like the phone is faulty ?

If its a cordless phone, then unplug the mains supply for about 30 seconds, then plug it back in.

Which phone is it?

Phone is cordless, BT premium. I unplugged from mains as suggested, the issue has cleared - I’ll see how it goes. Many thanks for your help.

That is quite a common issue with cordless phone and answering machines.
