Ping spikes

Hello,

I'm fairly new to BT and my connection has been pretty good so far.  But recently, I'm experiencing ping spikes in my games that I play - it usually goes from 20-30 to 100 for a good 4-5 seconds, then back down to 30-50, then up to 100-150.  It did this for a good 5-10 minutes earlier and then stopped.  My friends weren't having any of the ping spike issues, so I assume it's something to do with my connection or BT.

I've pasted some tracerts below, along with my router stats, just to see if there's anything there that might stand out as being a problem!  Thanks for any help you can give me!

Re: Ping spikes

Yeah, I have no idea why it's doing it.

Could it be the 3DB profile causing the issue?  Or something within the BT network?

The only reason it's not been connected 24/7 for longer is because I manually rebooted the router because I thought that would fix the problem.

Re: Ping spikes

resetting the router is unlikely to improve your connection and in most cases will make matters worse.

you connection has remained stable with the 3db noise margin and not a large number of errors for 5 days connection

Re: Ping spikes

Thanks for the replies.

Yeah, I think I've managed to track it down to certain situations.  If I'm listening to music on Spotify, or listening to a music video on youtube, and I play online PC games at the same time, I seem to get ping spikes for 4-5 seconds every so often, that I never got with BE.  Is that likely to be something with the Homehub?  Or the BT network as a whole?

If I exit Spotify, it stops spiking, so I'm pretty sure they're both linked, since there appears to me nothing wrong with my connection stat wise.  I also changed my ethernet port today to the gigabit one on the Homehub, rather than the 100mb.

It's not really an issue, but I do like to listen to music while playing games, so it is a bit annoying it does that.  Could it be the amount of packets being sent/received at the same time that is causing the problem?

Here are my stats again below, and thanks for any suggestions you can provide me with!

Re: Ping spikes

Spotify is P2P, at least in part, so it is probably the upstream causing the spikes.

You could either limit the library Spotify sees by moving music elsewhere so there is less to share, and therefore potentially less abuse of your bandwidth, or use something like Netlimiter to restrict the upstream available to Spotify.

Re: Ping spikes

also unless you started your BT Broadband contract after 1st of February or have recontracted to the new fully unlimited product p2p protocols are capped at peak times

Re: Ping spikes

Ohh, that would make sense then, Malfukshun! I have half the upload speed that I had with BE, and if I upload any more than 500/600kb/s while playing games, it makes my ping jump.

I'm on the 'totally unlimited' package, as I've only been with BT for about 18 days, so I don't believe I have any limits on my connection at all.

Re: Ping spikes

no in that case you are unlimited as to your upload speed you have nearly the maximum available  on ADSL2+which is 1.2mb you cannot get any faster on a residential line
