I am aware the the basic BT Speedtester has been flaky, to say the least, for the past few weeks. Sometimes it works but most times fails and gives a download reading of around 0 Mbps.
Using the beta version, which worked every time, gave more realistic readings and more in line with those that I have recorded over the last year or so.
Just now, as a check, I carried out tests on both versions, within minutes of each other.
BT Speedtest gave 6110 down, 830 up
BT Speedtest Beta gave 8860 down and 860 up.
The latter readings are more in line with my experience over the past 12 months and also correlate well with independent speed tests.
The upload speed is pretty consistent and seems to be a realistic assessment, but the difference in download speeds between the two version is rather more puzzling.
Until the end of January I was advised that the " IP Profile for your line is - 10043 Kbps"
Since then I have been advised that the "IP Profile for your line is - 9.08 Mbps"
The change in units probably reflects some software changes and is unimportant.
I assume that the profile is always going to be higher then the actual, (at least it always has been), so I am not particularly concerned.
However there does seem to be a significant difference between the two test results.
Solved! Go to Solution.
your profile is set by your connection speed and should be 88.2% of the conenction speed - so changing profile apart from different measures shows a difference in your connection speed. the change to Mbps is very recent
I agree both versions ob BTspeedtester should give the same results or at least very similar but I certainly am not confident of the figures provided by the btspeedtester test not beta as over the last week mine has been all over the place. the download speed from the beta version is always about right based on the speed I can download data at from othe sites
Thanks for that bit of info. I had been unclear as to how the profile was set and your figure is clearly spot on.
According to my (Draytek) router my download speed is 10.296888, so that, by your figure the profile would be 9.081.
For what it's worth, my recent upload profile is 0.83 Mbps and my router reports 1.024592 so presumably the inverse ratio more or less apllies for upload speeds.
My current stats are
|ATM Statistics||TX Cells||RX Cells||TX CRC errs||RX CRC errs|
|ADSL Status||Mode||State||Up Speed||Down Speed||SNR Margin||Loop Att.|
The SNR margin used to be around 6, when I had a higher speed, but now seems to hover around 9, but the apparent errors seem to have reduced quite significantly, if, that is, I am correctly interpreting the info.
It may be possible, if I do a power off cycle, that the router may find a faster connection but, to be honest, does it really matter. My current connectivity seems to be perfectly satisfactory, although perhaps I am tempting fate by saying that.
Thanks for your response. Much appreciated.
Sounds like a good idea. How can I contact the mods?
can take up to 3 working days for mods to contact you
Thanks for the advice. I'll look forward to an increase in speed now.
