Hi there,
It's been 3 weeks since I've joined BT and still struggling to have my old Virgin LL number ported across. It seems to be a common problem with porting numbers from Virgin. Presently I've both lines, BT and Virgin, active. The Virgin one is coming into the house underground and the BT one is overhead together with the fibre cable for broadband.
So far, BT have tried different things unsuccessfully. I have a 2nd BT number already and I am hoping that the matter will be escalated to someone who will know how to do and eventually sort it out.
Any advice please?
Many thanks!

was the number you are trying to post originally a virgin number or did you port it to virgin from a previous ISP?
If the number was originally a BT Retail number, then there should not normally be a problem, provide you are still living at the same address.
If it belonged to Virgin, or another provider, then its not normally possible to port it to BT Retail.

Thanks for your reply. Virgin number, same address for 12 years
Then if its always been a Virgin number then they would own it on their own network, which is totally separate to the BT Retail network, which has its own number ranges which are unique to a specific BT Exchange building.
Their numbers would not exist on the BT exchange, so could not be ported to BT.
I assume that you have never been a BT Retail customer before?
Thanks for your reply Keith. I'm a newbie with BT. Beginning of July, when we agreed on the contract dates, both providers were aware that I would like to keep the landline number and said nothing about the impossibility of porting it.
Just received a call from BT to say Virgin has confirmed the request within last 24 hrs and that the porting will take place on the 3rd September (almost a month after the initial date). Apparently, it took 3 weeks for the request to go through.
Fingers crossed, the porting will be sorted on the 3rd Sep without further delays. Thanks
Look forward to update as that may help others who come to the forum

BT may have found a way to overcome the porting issue. The incoming part of the porting is easy, as it can be done on the network.
The issue was always that the BT exchange would always issue a CLI (Calling Line Identity) which was tied to the specific BT Exchange concentrator, so unless some form of number translation has been implemented, outgoing calls will present the wrong number, so you end up with a partially ported number.
I would be interested to know if you do get your Virgin number ported.
