Porting and SMS/iMessage inconsistencies on iPhone(s)

Recently took advantage of 2 new BT mobiile SIM for kids - Black Friday deals were too good to miss. Used BT SIMs immediately they arrived, and have ported legacy numbers over from Virgin Mobile.
Now having number of problems for anyone sending/recieving texts/imessages to them. They are sending iMessages that carry their original BT number (and not the ported number), but any iMessages we send them to their ported i.e.originally Virgin number will only go as texts. The latter don't arrive on their device.
It seems as though both original and ported numbers are recognised by the phone/network. Very confusing and was hoping porting would be a simple pain free process.
