If you have moved to a different exchange, then it would not be possible to port your number, as each BT exchange has its own dedicated number range.
You should be able to get a changed number announcement connected to your old number, advising people of your new number.
If your number belonged to BT before you ported it to Virgin, then when you port it away from Virgin, it will revert to BT on the exchange where you were at the time it was ported to Virgin.
If you are now connected to a different exchange, then that number would not be available on this exchange, so you would have to accept a new number.
If you look up the two addresses, you will probably find you are now on a different exchange, which is why BT say you cannot have the number.
The only way you could keep the number, would be to stay with Virgin.
Have you managed to arrange a free changed number announcement on your old number, if that is what you want?

No I’ve told bt to cancel my contract and I’ve negotiated a discount with virgin
That`s fine, if you need to keep your phone number, it just means you would have to stay with Virgin.
