Possible Scam Call - IP Address Compromised, but they knew my name and address.

Go to solution

Hi,

Just had a phone call for an indian call centre claiming to be BT. They told me that my IP address had been compromised and that hackers were using my IP address. I asked them to confirm my name and address, which they did.

They then asked me to log onto my computer, and to run cmd/netstat so that I could see all the IP addresses being used. They then wanted me to go onto ***edited by mod***. I said that I didnt want to do this as I wasnt sure they were BT. The caller then put me through to his manager to help allay my fears. The manager then wanted me to google Team Viewer and to use the Team View 9. I was using my work computer and didnt want to install something on my work machine. So asked them to again confirm they worked for BT. He then gave me his number 0800 111 4567 and his name Alex Ibrahim. I then ended the call and dialled 1471 and then number that called me was  01988998122

Was this a genuine call from BT Tech Services or was I being scammed? They knew my name and address, so Im not sure if they were BT or not.

Thanks

Adam

It was a scam.

See http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/48253/kw/scam%20calls/c/761,6077

Nothing to do with BT.

If you respond, then they know there is a real person on the end, and will add you to a "suckers" list, and you will get even more calls, so just hang up and do not speak, or press any buttons.

They will also try to extract personal information from you.

There are lots of threads on this board about this.

Hi @adamac76  that was most certainly a scam, I'd recommend you report the call on this link to help us fight the scammers and protect other customers.

Hi, welcome to the forums.

Confirming name and address won't be tricky for the scammers, they will already have it! What they wont have is your IP address (and neither the account number). The question to ask is what is the IP address. You can find out by simply typing

whats my ip

into google. Of course, never tell them. They will either hang up or try to bluff around it.

Teamviewer is a well know program/website that allows remote access to a computer from another, by simply giving a passcode generated by it to the other person. They don't need remote access, that is to gain control of a computer to steal stuff.

The 0800 number is not a secret and is the broadband help line, and they could have given any name - including one that could work for BT.

BT tech services don't call, and BT calls would all show as an 0845 number (one of a couple). The 01988 99 number has been spoofed by the scammers and is a range not in use (it's a protected as shown by OFCOM).

Thanks very much for your reply, I have logged this as a scam on the BT website. I was wary as soon as they said that they needed me to log onto my computer, but was pretty certain it was dodgy when they asked me to give them access to my computer.
