Postcode lottery

Go to solution

Would just like to say how fed up I am with BT's policy of improving the areas that already recieve good BB speeds, and neglect the areas that have the slowest speeds with no plans on improving this situation.

I moved house, had 8-9Meg connection in old house into an area that gets 0.6Meg is intermittant and sometimes 200+ ping speeds.

Would say THANKS to BT but they are too busy upgrading infinity 1 customers to even higher speeds.......Fair or what?

Wish we paid for actual connection speeds 😞

Hi, to help us find the problem with your connection please may you see the following steps below:

1) Are you connected by master or test socket?.
2) Can you please run a BT speed test http://speedtester.bt.com (not beta version)
3) is there any noise on your line. dial 17070 option2 from landline. should be silent but slight hum normal on cordless phone.
4) please post adsl line statistics
ADSL Line Stats Help
If you have a BT Home Hub then....

Then:
1) Go to http://192.168.1.254 or http://bthomehub.home
2) click Settings
3) Click Advanced Settings
4) Click Broadband
5) Click Connection or sometimes called ADSL
The direct Address is http://bthomehub.home/index.cgi?active_page=9116 (for bthomehub3)

Re: Postcode lottery

Thanks for the speed test info.....however it is not a problem specific to me, everyone in my estate suffers the same fate.

Fact is BT deem us to be a marginal exchange.....only 3500 households.

Hi BT Retail your provider are not in control of the network or any upgrades or changes to it That is Openreach's responsibility and they provide and maintain the same network for ALL service providers under rules laid down by OFCOM

Re: Postcode lottery

What do these websites say about what you can get?

1)http://www.dslchecker.bt.com/
2) http://www.samknows.com/broadband/broadband_checker

BT retail (your ISP) do not maintain and roll out BT's network this is done by BT Wholesale and BT Openreach. BT have many different companies under the BTplc Name.

If you can do the steps that I previously mentioned then we can see if there is any thing you can do to improve your speeds.

I have a 5km long line and the people on this forum have improved my download speed from 0.6mb to 0.9-1.2mb

Cheers,
James

Re: Postcode lottery

Spoiler

dslchecker says between 1 and 3.5mbs ....prediction 1mbs

samknows says 512 is enabled and I 'may be able to get 1mbs'

I think it is outrageous that many parts of the country are 8mbs and up, and infinity is much higher still and work on those to go even faster, when some lowly postcode areas are ignored with occasional 0.2mbs improvements now and again.

Latest speed check on speedtest.net is 1.0mbs 0.23 upload. 45 ping.........shocking for 2012, I had this speed 10 years ago.

If you could post your ADSL line statistics from your router(including all the errors) that would also help.

If you have a netgear then try http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.2.1 for a Belkin and look for ADSL line stats

Please copy and paste them here, you may get an error when posting but ignore and press post again.

James

Re: Postcode lottery

Thanks,

Are you connected to the master socket or test socket? Can you also go back to the ADSL line stats and click show more as your missing a few values.

Your on a 4.6km line which I would estimate a speed of 1mb to 1.7mb

Your noise margin is good at 6dB which is normal.

Your sync rate is currently at 1.281 mb

Cheers,
James

Re: Postcode lottery

I live in a new house James, BT master sockets no longer exist it seems. BT point is now outside. I have filters on all internal sockets, and speeds are same from all sockets, I have tried as I thought one would be the master socket.
