Hi Guys
I have been reading various threads on the TP Link W9980 but I'm still having problems setting mine up.
I have followed all of the instructions and can access the internet via the BT Wifi with FON setting, but the two I have set up with my choice of name will not allow me to connect to the internet. I guess there will be something very simple (treat me as a complete novice please!)
I'm using a MAC, and have tried using the wifi name of test in this example
Wireless 2.4GHz
Status:Enabled
SSID:test
Channel:Auto(Channel 11)
Channel Width:Auto
Mode:11bgn mixed
Encryption:WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK
MAC Address: (removed)
Max Tx Rate:300Mbps
WDS Status:Disabled
and
Wireless 5GHz
Status:Enabled
SSID:test2
Channel:Auto(Channel 40)
Channel Width:Auto
Mode:11an mixed
Encryption:WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK
MAC Address:(removed)
Max Tx Rate:300Mbps
Any help would be much appreciated

Welcome to this user forum.
I have moved your post to a new thread, so you can get help from the community.
The TP Link TD-W8980 is an ADSL2 device not a VDSL one. Are you on normal BT Broadband, or BT Infinity?
The threads you mention relate to the TD-W9980 which is a VDSL one.
Hi,
thanks for the reply, we are on normal BT broadband

A non BT router does not transmit BT WiFi with FON.
What ADSL settings are you using and is the broadband light lit up?
DSL Modulation Type:ADSL2+
Annex Type Annex A
There is probably a setup wizard.
Hi,
What model of TP-Link is it? W8980 or W9980
If you are connecting to BT WiFi Fon then you are still connecting to the BT Hub and not the TP-Link. Only BT routers have the Fon function.
You will have to remove the hub entirely and use the TP-Link in place of it, otherwise you have two competing wireless signals and no doubt other issues.
Use the TP-Link's Quick Start option and put in the following.
User Name - bthomehub@btbroadband.com
Password - bt
Insert the info below, it may not necessarily be in this order.
MTU 1500
VPI =0
VCI =38
PPPOA
VC based Mux
For ADSL what you have is fine. If you have problems or you feel the TP-Link is too old you could try for a Newer model of TP-Link, the VR600 perhaps.
Just had a look at the TP-Link emulator for the W9980, looks like most of the info is there once you select 'ADSL BT' (using Quick Setup). So just username and password as mentioned before and set the wireless up to suit yourself.
Are all the lights indicating that you have a connection?
Is the RJ11 DSL lead plugged into the microfilter or filtered master socket properly?
Make sure you have the latest 160125 firmware from the TP-Link site then perform a factory reset and start again using the quick setup, select BT_ADSL for ISP and the wizard will do the rest except username and password which you need to enter when prompted.
